JANUARY 27, 1956 v7 PONTIAC'S CLUB DE MER This low, two-passenger sports car with an aluminum body it on of five new experimental "dream carl" featured at the GM Motorama of 1 956 in New York. Powered by a 300-horsepower V8 engine, it standi only 38.4 .inches high. Most striking features are the dorsal fin which flashes up from the rear deck surface and twin bubble wind shields. Fashioned in the bold sports car design that has pushed Buick up into the best seller ranks, the Super four door hardtop promises to be the style leader in its class. The fully exposed rear wheel, the slanting doorbelt line, and the smart new front end styling lend the Super hardtop an air of tportiness seldom obtained in a production model. The 255 horsepower V-8 engine in the Super is coupled with Buick's new variable pitch Dynaflow transmission for outstanding per formance. Both Dynaflow end power steering are standard equipment on the Super series. The four-door hardtop is featured In Buick's Super and Roadmaster series for the first time this yeer. Chevrolet Has Sweeping Advances In 1956 Design Sweeping adraneee m durability, aafety and power, paced by a new 306-horaepower VB engine, headline the engineering achieve ment In the 1056 Chevrolet. The horsepower boo.it, Riving added alp for passing and pulling out or tight apots, runs the gamut of Chevrolet's line of passenger ear engines, beginning with a 140 horaopower six featuring an 8-to-I compression ratio. This engine, available with standard, overdrive or Powergllde transmission, re places 123 and IBs-horsepower sixes In the 1959 line. The 1S68 line offers a choice of three V8s, Including Kill-horse-power last year, has a new Chev rolet compression ratio high of 9.25 to 1. The entire line of engines, both V8s and alxea, have redesigned hlgh-llft camshafts and hydraulic valve lifters. Full advantage of the optional "power package" Intro duced last year Is extended to all 11)56 station wagons through a re designed fuel tank which permits use of a dual exhaust system 'on these models for the first time. Two of the key advances pro viding Increased durability for the V8 engines are a new clutch fac lug offered aa regular equipment , and an optional full-flow oil filler. Tha woven asbestos composition clutch facing Is an Improvement suited to the higher engine speeds and torque of the V8. The new material not only provides smooth er operation but also cuts duuu the possibility of "chatter." The new filter system prolongs Tie filter unit la easily serviced from underneath the car. To pro vide Installation clearance, the oil pan has been reshaped. Oil refill specifications remain at four quarts. A vita! safety Improvement Is of fered oy a new sealed beam head' lamp with a redesigned lowi beam lens pattern which throws more light along the light-hand side of the road. Tests show that the light provides up to 80 feet more "seeing distance." Another leature of the light cuts off "stray' rays to provide improved vision In uiciement weather. other anfety features Include crash-tested door locks which re duce the danger of doors springing open In a collision. Introduced on Chevrolet models last summer, the safety locks consist of a flange on urn noor wnicn overlaps another flnnge on the striker mounted on the body pillar. This was evidenced by the en thusiastic response to the 1B55 Dodge LaFemme, first production passenger car designed exclusively lor the ladles. For 1956 there Is a new and even more ' glamorously styled LaFeinme model. . Dodge la introducing LaFemme 1958 at automobile shows through' out the country In January. The new LaFemme leatures col ors and fabrics reflecting feminine taste. Two shades of soft mauve regal orchid and misty orchid grace the sleek exterior of this Custom Royal two-door hardtop. Throughout the 1 n t e r t o r of LaFemme these same colors are artfuly combined with gold. Jacquard upholstery Is woven In an orchld-on-orchld tapestry - like design, contrasted by gold vinyl bolsters, seat facings and door panels. The floor covering Is a tufted pile carpeting of flecked light and dark orchid, while the headlining features a misty orchid back ground with gold dots. exclusively feminine accessories Include a pair of matching gold vinyl cases on the back of each front seat. One case Is equipped with a chic rain outfit, including a nylon coat, pert jockey cap and folding umbrella. Fashioned from the same fabric as the car's head lining, the rain coat and bat are sparked by gold buttons. Tne other case provides plenty of room for such items as a small handbag, notebook, a hat, scarves, or even a bathing suit. The new four-door "hardtop" fea tures panoramic styling, Vogue 1 1 two-toning, sirato-streak v-8 en-! glne and new Strato-Fllght Kdra Matlc transmission. 1 In the Star Chief series, the new "hardtop" Is 212.6 Inches long on a 124 Inch wheelbase and Is one and a half Inches lower than the four-door sedan.
