The students at OTI will have the use of facilities in the Y Center established there in the rear of the engineering building. The center was made pos sible through the efforts of Winston Purvine, OTI director, and the student steering committee with the assistance of Campbell. The Klamath County YMCA pro gram among Oregon Technical' In stitute students will ' get a big boost Saturday when the OTI YMCA Center is officially opened in a climax of the local observance of National YMCA Week. The present location of the cen ter, in a school building in back of the Engineering Building, Is only temporary, but equipment and space at the present facility in cludes a well furnished clubrooni, a library, a hobby shop, a snack bar, a social room containing a juke box. pool table, shuffle board. chess and checker boards, a dance floor and other recreational equip ment. At the north end of the center, there are facilities for athletic February Set Aside For Navy The Navy took the limelight to day as Oovernor Paul L. Patterson of Oregon proclaimed February 1956 "Navv Slgn-un Month" In the xtatc of Orct'on at tho capital in Salem. . The proclamation was presented by Ihe governor to Mr. Roy L. Orem, treasurer, Portland Council of tho Navy League, and Comman der J. E. Lindsirom, USN. Thir teenth Naval District representa tive for Portland. Lieutenant junior grade, M. W. Thompson, assistant officer in chiiiRC ot the Oregon Navy Re cruiting District and commander "Navy Kigu-up Month" state of Oregon was present for the ceremony. A special recruiting drive will be conducted in Oregon in February to assist 1ii "OpcMation Sign-up" which Is being held throughout the United Slates by the Navy Re cruiting Service and all Naval com mands. The purpose ot Ihe drive Is to get Oregon to the top of the list in the national standings, percentage-wise of men enlisting in the Navy. events. Including some apparatus loaned by the Institute, The program at the center was developed after a questionnaire had been submitted .to OTI stu dents. Policies of the downtown YMCA will apply at OTI. end membership regulations will be the same. . An OTI student steering commit tee, which aided in the organiza tion of the center, will have the overall responsibility for program planning and center leadership. The committee will, In turn, be advised by YMCA staff secretaries Bill Cornell and Paul Campbell. Center operation will be restrict ed to one week night and on week ends until an additional staff mem ber can be added. The center will be open from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Tues days and all day and evening on Saturday and Sunday. The original organizers of the center were a group of students desiring a recreational center on campus. After a meeting with Campbell, the' student steering committee was formed with Jack Douglas, OTI business manager, as its adviser. After several planning meetings, a fund of $900 was raised and the center began to take form. Participating students number about 200, and this fugure Is grow ing daily. YMCA leaders have acknowledged the cooperation re ceived from W. D. Purvine, insti tute director, and other on of ficials, and much of the equip ment has been donated by the school and by private Individuals. Lebeck To Speak During Services The Rev. C. E, Lebeck, pastor of the Assembly of O o d Church, Eighth and Oak streets, will speak at 7:30 Sunday night on the subject, "The Key That Unlocks the Door of Life." Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Parker will render an Instrumental and must cal number. At the Sunday morning worship service at 11 a.m. Lebeck will speak on "Kindling a Fire." Mr. and Mrs. Elvln Hess will sing and the choir will render spe. cinl music at both the evening and morning services.
