H. - Orel JED HERALD AND NEWS, W-2F crrns kdd In Tax Return Taxpayers are urged to secure their Form W-2 not only from their current employer but from all em ployers for whom they may have worked during the calendar year 1956 before filintf their income tax return, District Director R. C. Oranquist for the Portland Dis trict said today. "Under Section 6051 of the inter nal revenue code, employers are required to supply all employes with the employe copy and the tax return copy of the withholding statement (Form W-2) not later than January 31 of each year," Mr. Oranquist said. Taxpayers should not contact the Internal Revenue Service of fice for Information regarding the securing of the withholding state ment (Form W-2) since this is a dual responsibility which rests wholly on the employe and his employer. If an employe has moved dur ing the year or has changed posi tions, it is very Important that he contact his employers and advise them of any change in address immediately. In this way, all employers will have a record of a current ad dress for mailing the Form W-2 withholding statement. District Di rector Granquist said. The Form W-2 (tax return copy) must accompany a Form 1040 or Form 1040A income tax re turn when submitted to the Inter nal Revenue Service office. In cases where there is a difference between the amounts indicated on Ihe withholding statement (Form W-2) which the employe receives from his employer and the amount the employe taxpayer is reporting on his Form 1040 or Form 1040A, the employe must secure a cor rected Form W-2 from his em ployer. Do not contact the Inter nal Revenue Service as they can do nothing about it. This Is a matter to be settled between the employe and his em ployer and the Form W-2 with holding statement figures on in come and tax reductions must agree with those which are en tered on the Forms 1040 or 1040A, covering the pay period of time in volved. "At all times the Form W-2 is the controlling factor in determining income," Mr. Oran quist said. Returns undergoing pre-refund audit require a nominal working period before the taxpayer re ceives his refund check. Taxpay ers are urged to remember this before writing the tax office to determine cause for delays. Such correspondence only serves to compound the problem, advise tax officials.
