Eric Sevareid's Newscast Fills Sunday Video Void By CHAIU.ES MERCER NEW YORK WJ CBS-TV has an excellent new program In CBS Sunday News presided over by Eric Sevareld. It fills a void In weekend television news pro. cramming. In his first edition last Sunday Sevareld showed that he recog nises front page news. That's worthy of mention because some television commentators sacrifice front page news for secondary news chiefly because films of the less Important events are avail able. As time passes It's probable that Sevareld will be haunted by a fre quent paucity of Important week end news. One hopes that he and his CBS force will develop a great variety of news features which on many a dull weekend could well fill 29 minutes of the 30 minutes allotted to CBS Sunday News. A good example of a news fea ture was shown Sunday In a report from London on British commer cial television. Oeorge Schaefer Is one of the most skillful directors in televl slon, as his work on Hallmark Hall of Pame (NBC-TV) regularly re veals. Perhaps It was not his fault that "The Corn Is Green," as seen on television 8unday, was Inferior to the Broadway stage presenta tion many years ago starring Ethel Barrymore. Eva Le Oalllenne, as a woman ho wants to bring enlightenment to a dark bit of Wales, simply lacked the warmth, gusto and con viction that Miss Barrymore brought to the role. John Kerr lacked the tough abrasive quality of a young Welsh miner. The re sult, to one viewer, was rather wooden drama at least in the first hour of the hour and a half show. The kindest one can be about The NBC Comedy Hour, which was launched on NBC-TV opposite the Ed Sullivan Show on CBS-TV. Is tills: Let's pretend it wasn't launched last Sunday. Let's pre tend It's going to be launched next Sunday when the ways are better greased. Jonathan Winters and Bob and Ruy supplied some fun, but the rest of the hour fell flat. Just what to do about It must be troubling many earnest minds. Tor cne thing, has anybody considered pulling It out of Hollywood? By ALINE MOSBY -United press Hollywood Writer HOLLYWOOD (UP) Hollywood latest organisation is called "The Rat Pack," a celebrated group de voted to poking a little fun Into this sometimes lifeless communi ty. Last sum mer, members chartered a bus (with a bar), and startled the citi zens of Long Beach by showing up there to see Judy Garland's stage show. "The club is Just for fun, sort of a gag." explained Miss Bacall. "You have to breath a little life into this old burg now and then. We're a Jolly group of people and we like us better than anybody." The club has a coat-of-arms and a charter. Members, however, can not release this Information yet as they can't agree on it.
