Phipps, 1663 Greensprings Drive, was invented by him at Lincoln Air Force Base, Nebraska. Phipps mad the part from old metal and radio parts. The gadget consists of key board lock that will only release when the machine is trans mitting properly, and a yellow light that burns only when the same condition exists. The modification saves approximately $200 yearly and increases the life of teletype motors 85 per cent. Local Airman Invenis Device That Saves AF A modification on U.S. A I r Force teletype machines, which saves the Air Force approximately $200 per year at Lincoln Air Force Base, Nebraska, nas Deen developed by a Klamath Falls airman. Hilarious hit i rrr $200 Yearly modification on the teletype mo tors, which costs between two and three dollars in material and two hours of work, from scrap metal and old radio parts and switches. Prior to Installation of Phipps' modification, the transmitter mo tors on the teletype machines had to run 24 hours a day and repairs were necessary as often as 10 times a week. With the use of the part Phipps invented, the life of the motors has been increased 85 per cent since it is only necessary to run tne motors 10 out of every 60 hours. In the past It was possible for the teletype operators to transmit message or weather sequence; and not be aware of the fact that Uie transmitter hadn't sent all the message. Phipps solved this prob lem Uy combining a mechanical keyboard lock with his modifica tion that will not release until the transmitter is functioning prop erly. Airman Phipps entered the serv ice In July, 1954 and took his ba sic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. After completing basic training he was assigned to Francis E. War- len Air Force Base, Wyoming where he took a 19 weeks course in teletype mecnajucs. He was graduated from Klamath Union High School in 1954.
