Important Household Task
Examinlna a roof is one of the
most Important annual Inspections
of a house to make sure it is in
shape for another winter and
stormy weather.
Such Inspections are best made
in the fall. Working on the ex
terior of a house is more difficult
in cold weather and results might
be less satisfactory.
A home inspection should be
made even if nothing apparently
is wrong. This will insure detec
tion of structural defects, enab
ling repairs to be made before
an emergency arises.
If a relatively new roof has been
damaged in a specific spot by a
I falling tree branch, for example,
or by ngninmg repair may oe
comparatively simple and feasible.
But if a roof is old and weather
beaten, one slight leak can be tak
en as a sign that the entire roof
is about to fall.
The National Bureau of Stand
ards says: "Leaks that are caused
by normal weathering of the roof-

ance policy pointers:
1. Know your tools and how to
use them. The man who neglects
to put guards on circular saws or
planers, uses his fingers to tighten
drill chucks Instead of a chuck key,
or Is careless when working with
a solderinu iron, may saw himsoif
instead of his lumber, get stuck
with a flying drill and finish by
burning his house down. Rend the
direction that come with each tool
and follow them.
2. Dress for the occasion. Dang
ling ties, loose cuffs, hanging shirt
tails are prey for machinery. Gog
gles are a must when performing
a grindiim operation. Even Rloves
have their place on when handling

WHEN LIGHTS DIM
Electric lights that dim when an
appliance is plugged In or when a
motor is started in a heme work
shop are a signal of an overloaded
circuit. It means you are wasting
power.
READ YOUR LABELS
Many expensive mistakes could
be averted if people read and fol
lowed the directions on labels. You
can't expect a product to do some
thing its manufacturer hasn t in
tended it to do.
To start using a paint roller,
pour paint into the tray until It
covers about half of the sloping
bottom of the tray. Roll the roller
in the paint until the covering is
saturated Then roll it back once
or twice on the shallow end of the I

modern asphalt shingles. In the
