One year ago today, he was em ployed but worried about keeping his Job, after losing nine out of 12 games as head coach of the Washington Redskins. Today, big Joe is the United Press National Football League Coach of the Year, after his Red skins wound up -as the surprise team of the 1955 season with an 8-4 record and second place in the NFL's Eastern Division. Kuharich was picked by . 15 out of 30 sportswriters who covtr pro fessional football in 11 cities. Sid Oillman of the Los Angeles Ranis ran second with seven votes, and other ballots were scattered among Paul, Brown of Cleveland, Weeb Eubank of the Baltimore Colts, George Halas of the Chicago Bears and Ray Richards of the Chicago Cardinals. Kuharlch's selection was almost a foregone conclusion after the job he d d with the down-troaaen Kea skins. Washington has not finished higher than third In 10 years, pre viously had only one winning sea son since 1945, and was given no chance as a title contender this year. ' But under the ex-Notre Dame star's guidance, the 1955 Redskins knocked off the powerful Browns in the season's opener, and stayed in the running until the next to last week when New York elimin ated them. Kuharich turned out to .be an astute trader and a ruthless pruner completely re-building the Red skins in his first two years as coach. The score was tied 14 times be fore reserve forward Wayne Moss sank two tree throws to put the Staters ahead to stay. OSC led 39 35 at the half, Michigan guard Ken Nanson topped the scorers with 22 points, Dave Gambce was high for OSC with 19. Oregon found the range in the last five minutes to put the stop per on Northwestern. The visitors led most of the first half and were in front, 52-44 at halftime. The Ducks caught up when the second half was three minutes old and finally passed Northwestern for keeps with seven minutes to go. Oregon center Max Anderson pumped in 31 points for the Ducks. Dick Mast had 27 and Glen Lose 26 points for Northwestern. LATE-GAME At St. Louis, sophomore center Bruno Boin scored 23 points for Washington and paced a late-game rally that fell Just short of catch ing the Billikins. The Huskies trailed by 22 points, 50-34, when they started their drive midway of the second half. They cut the margin to 66-63 before St. Louis again found the range. While San Francisco retained Its No. 1 status last night by downing Wichita 75-65 at Wichita, Kan., Utah saw its No. 3 ranking slightly tarnished when Dayton won a 77-73 decision In the opener of the Ken tucky Invitational Tournament at Lexington. Jim Paxson, a 6-foot-6 Dayton mainstay, was the big man around the basket for the nation's fourth ranked college club as he contrib uted 35 points to the cause. It was Utah's first defeat in six games, and ran Dayton's string to 7-0. Paxson'a total was a record for the Kentucky tourney. Gary Ber gen led Utah with 24 points. Last December in the same tournament, Kentucky knocked off Utah In the first rouud, and the Utes Uicn dropped a consolation third place game to Southern Cali fornia. Utah suffered only two more losses all season. In the other game at Lexington. Kentucky downed Minnesota 72-65 as Bob Burrow collected 27 points. Dayton will bo a slight favorite over Kentucky in tonight's title game. Kentucky, ranked ninth na tionally, appears to be recovering after a bad start this year. The San Francisco Dons racked up their 32nd straight, 6 this year, by turning back Wichita as 6-foot-10 All-America Bill Russell tapped in 17 points.
