The preliminary report just re leased shos that although the land in farms Increased from 36.613,291 acres In 1950 to 37.800.380 acres In 19)4, the number of farms declined from 137.IHS to 123,074. Average Size l'p The average size of the Califor nia farm increased from 266.9 acres to 307.1 and the value of the land and buildings soared from an average of i40,509 to A whopping $59 144. The largest decline In the number of fnrms came in the group of small farms between 10 and 29 acres. The only category to show a gain was the farms In the 1000 acre and over bracket. Tne amount of land Irrigated on California farms increased to 7, 04S.792 acres, up 610.468 acres. Increased mechanization made life easier lor the state's farmers. The census showed more farms had milking machines, grain com bines, corn pickers, pick-up hay balers, trucks, and tractors In 1954 than in 1950. The increase in the number of farms with the machines gained added significance from the fact that the total number of farms on which they could be employed was smaller.
