Air Force Tells Nuclear 'Scope BALTIMORE I The world's Urgest nuclear microscope capa ble of measuring parts of an atom "with an accuracy of four-thousandths of a tiillionth of an inch," was introduced yesterday by the Air Force. Air Research and Development Command headquarters here said the instrument, with an "eyepiece" weighing 55 tons, had been devel oped by Stanford University sci entists under contract to ARDC. "Stanford physicists believe the instrument eventually will be able to measure protons, the smallest matter within the nucleus of an atom," said the statement. Prof. Robert Hofstadter, director of the nuclear research program at Stanford, spent three years de signing and building it. Hie answer to this and other im portant questions will be uV.crm lned by frame commission field agents during the big game sur veys and range studies now in progress. Big ga me surveys will continue on all winter ranges throughout the winter months. During December and into Jan uary, herd composition will be de termined by classifying the number of bucks, does, and fawns in each herd. The study is conducted as big game animals move to the winter ranges and must be done before the bucks lose their antlers. Herd composition is essential in determining the number of bucks available for hunting and breeding purposes and the number of fawns avallnble for future hunters. Incomplete reports from game agents indicate that the buck, doe ratio is normal and that plenty of big racks escaped the guns of the hunters this past fall. In addition to herd composition, lange studies are also being con ducted to measure the amount of browse available for big game win ter use. Sample plots have been established on all big game ranges, and measurements of the growth and vigor of the browse species are made each year. An other study will be conducted in the spring to determine the. amount of winter utilization. Big game population trends whether the herds are increasing. decreasing, or remaining constant and mortality studies will be con ducted in late winter and early spring when all big game will be using the winter ranges.
