The children, son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Brown, 4454 Boardman Avenue, are featured on a pamphlet distributed nationally by the camera firm. Mrs. Brown was pleasantly .surprised when she happened to pick up the national Christmas card promotion filler at a local drug store and discovered the pictures of her daughter and son. She said the picture was taken in 1953 when they were residents of Rochester, New York. The girl in the middle is a friend of Mrs. Brown's children, Roxanne Rossiter of Ro chester. Mr. and Mrs. Brown came to Klamath Falls two months ago to make their home. He is associated with his father in he Western Oil Burner Company. But Hugh Todd Naylor Gaitskell, 49. seems to have the advantage over Herbert Stanley Morrison(and Aneurin Bevan. Re sults of balloting among the 278 Labor members of the House of Commons are expected late to nipht. Gaitskell was 12 when he wore the derby and carried the stick the uniform of Winchester, one of Britain's most exclusive schools for the monied classes. He decided a long time ago, however, that his future lay with promoting so cialism? While Gaitskell swerved to the left, he didn't swing all the way. He found his niche somewhere be tween the right wing and the cen ter of the Labor party. His grandfather was consul gen eral in Shanghai. His father had a job in the Indian civil service. His childhood was peopled wiuh servants and he lived well. - At Oxford, after some minor disappointments, he won top marks in economics, politics and philos ophy. After Oxford he became a Ch er and slowly his interests shifted to economics Hiid politics. In 11 and 1935 he ran for Parliament on the Socialist ticket and lost. At the beginning of the war he became private secretary to Hugh Da Hon, a big figure in the Labor party. He finally got into Parlia ment in 1945. Within six months he was parliamentary secretary lo a minister. In 1947 he became the 1 minister of fuel and power and in 1950 chancellor of the exchequer, a top job corresponding, to secre tary of the Treasury in Washing ton. He has been out of a top job since Sir Winston Churchill's Con servatives won the 1951 election, but has remained in Parliament. " 'u i:3k. 7 J&ti r it 1 Defense Budget Points Toward Stormy Election WASHINGTON i.fi President Ei senhower's proposal for a btilion dollar boost in defense spending and a possible battle over tax cuts pointed today toward a stormy election-year session of Congress. The President's plan to step up the production of B52 bombers, jet interceptors and development of the guided missile program won general support from Republicans and Democrats, But the 35'o-billion-dollar defense budget he outlined to top congres sional leaders in a White House briefing yesterday held a threat to tax reductions and budget bal ancing. Several leaders in both the House and Senate said they" saw little chance of substantial tax reductions. Several other issues arose out of two days of White House briefings which signaled forthcoming buttles. In individual statements, Demo crats and Republicans displayed sharp differences of opinion with each other and even with their party colleagues on debt pay ments, continuance of foreign eco nomic aid, proposed new farm pro grams, highway financing and school construction. Syria Sees UN Meet On Protest UNITED NATIONS, N. Y. If Syria expects the Security Council to meet soon on the Damascus government's protest against Is rael's attack on Syrian posts in Galilee. Ahmed Shukalry, chairman of Syria's delegation to the General Assembly who announced the pro test at a news conference, indi cated his country will ask the coun cil to take stern action against Is rael. He did not disclose Syria' strategy but said It would call for "measures which have not been asked before." The U. N. Charter authorizes the council to recommend a cessation of aggression. That failing, the council may call on U. N. mem bers to sever diplomatic, econom ic and communications ties with the aggressor nation. Finally, it may call on members for armed force to halt aggression. The council so far has never voted sanctions against one of the parties in the Arab-Israeli con flict, contenting itself with censur ing the nation it considers the guilty party. Israeli forces attacked four Sy rian posts on the northeast shore of the Sea of Galilee Sunday night. Israel charged the posts had fired repeatedly on Israeli fishing and police boats on the lake along which Jesus Christ spent much of his life. , Israel said 55 Syrians were killed and 29 captured, to 4 Israelis killed and 12 wounded in the op eration. The Syrian protest said 49 Sy rians were killed 5 officers, 32 sol diers and 12 civilians, including women. It said 8 other Syrian sol diers were wounded and 30 cap tured. The Damascus radio claimed earlier that 100 Israelis were killed or wounded. Shukairy called the attack a "major military operation, atro cious and treacherous," that could not be justified as retaliation. His government asked the council to meet "as soon as possible," and Shukalry said he expected the 11 nation body to take the matter up late this week or early next. "The same thing applies , to Asia now." j House Speaker Rayburn (D-Tex) reaffirmed his support of legisla tion to finance highway construc tion which would put the burden of the cost on road users. Conferees ! said the Eisenhower administration still has not resolved the financing question but appears ready to abandon its previous bond plan. Eisenhower stood firm on his flexible farm price support oro- j gram, plus some additional meas-1 ures he has Indicated he will pre-1 pose. Rayburn and Senate Majority Leader Johnson iL-Tex plugged for a return to high, rigid supports.
