Oregon Flood Danger Oyer - By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Flood dangers ended in Oregon Tuesday as cold weather moved In from the north. The Weather Bu reau warned of continued cold and said some snow is possible later in the week. The upper Willamette River and tributaries were fsllir.s Tuesday after cresting at stout flood stage of 12 feet at Harrisburg. There Is little damage at that level. Heavy weekend rains had swollen the river. Elmer Fisher, river forecaster at the Portland Weather Bureau, said the Willamette will crest short of 17 feet at Albany Tuesday night. Flood stage there is 20 feet. - The santiam pushed the level up to about 18 feet at Jefferson. Hooding lowlands there, but with little damage. The Santiam runoff caused the Willamette to crest at Salem at about 16'j teet Tuesday morning. The later crest,- moving downstream from Albany Wednes day, wtli not be as high. Cold air moved In from western Canada, sending the thermometer down to t degrees at KUensburg. In Eastern Oregon Burns reported 30 and Baker 31. Thfi proposal, it was reported, failed to get approval from the Defense Department and budget makers. The reported turn-down for the ,1957 fiscal year budget does not mean the idea of constructing a nuclear powered carrier has been discarded, some of those fp miliar with the project and with budget miking said. The request for congressional au thorization to start building such a supersize, superpowered ship is be ing held in abeyance pending furth er development and study of de signs for atomic reactors and of the ship itself, some of these offi c' - said. Secretary of Defense Wilson said he had brought the matter of an atomic carrier up at a meeting of congressional leaders with Presi dent Eisenhower Tuesday, but gave no details of the talk. Wilson attended the White House session just before his takeoff for a North Atlantic Treaty Organiza tion meeting in Europe. Wilson said he discussed the Na vy budget in general at the White House. The plan for a big atomic carrier was described in a story carried Monday by The Norfolk (Va.) Virginian-Pilot. The newspaper said the carrier might have as many as eight atomic heat generators to develop steam for driving Uie car rier at high speed. Holstad, 55, who dis appeared from his home here last Friday, was called off Monday by State Police. Bloodhounds tracked Holstad to the bank of a river near his home. His slippers were found nearby.
