Vandenberg Monday after pleading guilty to fQony charges. Jerry Lee Maxwell, 28. who lias served thrge state prison terms, was sentenced to 20 years for for gery. Nichols, Maxwell first became Involved with the law in 1944 when he was made a Wjard of the juvenile court In Klamath County. oHe has since served terms In Texas State Prisdn. Judge Vandenberg point ed out tha under a recently en acted law, the court could Impose triple the maximum sentence of 20 years for forgery or Invoke the habitual criminal law which prescribes a life sentence. When Harold Hanson '!6. charged with obtaining property under lalse pretenses and a first offen der, faced the court, Judge Van denberg said: "You have Just seen what hap. pens at the end of the criminal trail In the case in which the court just passed Judgment. If you want to see how the habitual crim inal law works in Oregon, just keep 011 your present route." Hanson admitted he cashed sev eral checks and used the proceeds to gamble. Habeas Corpus Petition Filed A petition of a writ of habeas corpus was filed in Circuit Judge David R. Vandenberg's court Mon day on behalf of Mrs. Patricia Cortez, Klamath Falls, whq claims her 9-year-old son. Marcellus John Norwest Jr.. is being illegally held by the present wife of the child s father. ' Attorney L. Orth Sisemore. who brought the action on behalf of Mrs. Cortez. said the boy is now living with Mrs. Pauline Norwest. The father is in the county jail awaiting sentence for manslaught er. Norwest pleaded guilty to sfciot ing Jackie Jones, cx-convict, In Chiloquin last summer. Attorney Sisemore claims that when she divorced Norwest in 1950, Mrs. Cortez was given custody of their son. Shortly after the divorce, the boy went to Chiloquin to visit his father and never returned.
