Huskies Here For Cage Tilts Klmatii'i high school basketball season moves into the first official game action tonight and Saturday evening jtt Pelican Court as the Klamath Union Pelicans of Don Peterson host the invading Huskies of "Reno High School for a non ' conference series. Both teams, although lacking in experience, have been classed as contenders in their respective leagues as the forthcoming season approaches. Reno, defending Neva da state AAA high school champion and Northern Interstate Conference winner last year, was hit hard by last spring's graduation, as was Klamath Union. The Huskies can claim only three returning letter men, but that is one more than the Pels can count. Coach John Robb, in his first season as head cage boss at Reno High, has lettermen Tom Sloan, Jerry Moon and Fred Black back after winning letters last year. For Peterson's cagers, only Orln Perkins and Dave Pepple played enough to earn monograms last sea son. . FIRST OUTING This is Reno's first outing of the pew season, and the Pels first "game" play. Last Friday nignt at Pelican Court, the Pels turned in a 3-0 Southern Oregon Confer ence Jamboree victory over Ash lund. Grants Pass and Medford, while racking up 51 points in three quarters of play. This weekend's series will be more of a true test of what is ahead for Klamath Un ion basketball fans. The Huskies and Pels have met on three occasions in the past with the Nevada powerhouse winning two and the Pels one. Last year at Reno. Klamath fell twice before a Husky team that was the talk of Nevada and Northern California prep circles. The losses of 6-8 Stan Valentyne, Jeff Morby, Len Mar dian. Dean Paddy and Bob Clem mens, last year's starting quintet, have hurt the Reno prospects, but Robb is reportedly building another top contender with this year's club. Sloan and Moon are expected to draw the starting forward spots against the Pels this evening, while Black will hold down one of the guard positions, as Robb makes full use of his three veterans. The other two opening berths will prob ably be given to guard Alex Kan wetz, up from last year's Junior varsity, and center Ron Oifford, 6-4, also a graduate of Reno's Jun ior varsity ranks. LAST MINUTE Other possible last minute chang es in Reno's first-line might find Bob Morton at a forward spot, Paul Campbell at center and John Hancock working at a guard posi tion, v Peterson said late this week he still hadn't settled on a starting five, but would 'again be doing srme experimenting to find a quin tet that can be called upon to carry the heavy load that faces the Whiteblrds. Two "sure" start ers for the Pels will probably be big Olenn Moore at center and Butch Kimpton at one of the two guard slots. The other three start ers will come from forwards Orin Perkins, Earle Tichenor and Cliff Sutherland, and guards Donn Tau- cher. Lee McGIll and Mike Runge. Others who might possibly see basketball action against the Husk ies this weekend for Peterson's crew are Jerry Burke, Dave Pep ple, the other returning lettermen. Bill Hamblln, Bill Williams and Ken Douglas. Game time of the varsity clash is 8.15. A preliminary game both nights will pit Ray Coley's Junior varsity cagers against the National Guard team of the City League. The jayvee-National Guard contest starts at 6:45. Doors and ticket booths will open at 6:30, according - to Joe Peak,, athletic director of KUHS. College Prexy Hung ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. fl Tom Popejoy, president of the University of New Mexico, was hanged in effigy Thursday night, apparently by students voicing dis approval of the release of head football Coach Bob Titchenal. A stutfed dummy bearing a sign "Popejoy" was found hanging from a totem pole near the pres ident's office on the campus, Wednesday, Popejoy had an nounced that Titchenal would be removed as head coach at the school. OFFICE SUPPLIES Phone 7412 Johnny Foster Joins Owls For HSC Series Humboldt State College and Ore gon Technical Institute open a 1 two-game basketball aeries tonight at Areata, California, and Wally Palmberg's Owls from the Mile High Campus flew south with a big smile as they attempt to sweep berth frays for the four-year Lumber Jacks. Palmberg learned yesterday that Oregon Tech officials had cleared the name of Johnny Foster, and the 6-2 former all-state hoop star from Central Catholic la now eligible to play for the Owls. When Foster en rolled at OTI, he lacked a few cred its and these had to be made up this semester before he was per mitted to play. The addition of Foster proves to be a problem, but a pleasant one. for Palmberg. Last Saturday night without the services of "Jumping Johnny," the Owls bounced back from a Friday night defeat at the hands of Olympic Junior College to swamp the Brem erton hoop squad 95-64. Two of the mainsprings in the Owl win were Bob Frost and John McCutcheon, one of whom might have to take a backseat to Foster now that he has been given an okay to play. Humboldt, a four-year college, has nine lettermen on their var sity squad this year, four of whom were starters on last year's Lum berjack quintet. Coach Franny Olv ins, a former Humboldt athletlo star himself, has 6-4 Bob Myers to lead his club at center and Oeorge Ibrarreta, a smooth-working guard to direct the floor play of the Lumberjacks. Myers is a three year letterman and Ibrarreta is a two time monogram winner.
