Damage Survey Work Begins SALEM Wl Three federal and state agencies are making surveys to find out how much damage last month's freeze did to Oregon's farm crops, Gov. Paul Patterson said Wednesday. These surveys will decide wheth er the farmers need federal disas ter loans. Small businesses al ready have been cleared for such loans. The surveys are being made by the Federal Crop Reporting Serv ice, Oregon State College Exten sion Service and the State Depart ment of Agriculture. "It is still too early to deter mine the full extent of damage," the governor said. "But it Is evi dent by now that this sudden freeze will work a serious hardship on- a number of citizens engaged in the production of small fruits, cranberries and nursery stock." The small business loan approv al was announced by Washington's Sen. Magnuson. The volunteer fire department uses the proceeds from the dance to buy new equipment and for other expenses during the year. ; ' v NEW BOOKS ON THE DESK by Addie May Nixon city librarian Again I find new books on my desk, and as I said last week, there are so many interesting books this fall it is a pleasure to share them with you. I am sorry I am not able to tell you about each book, and have to give you Just a "sampling." I pick up a book called "Papa's Wife" by Thyren Fere Bjorn. TV? is the story of a little Swedish housemaid who married her pas tor. Later, they moved to the United States, and raised a large family of children. This is a cheer ful unaffected book that leaves one with a "good feeling." "What is Vital in Religion" by Harry Emerson Fosdick is his eighth book of sermons. The New York Times says, "He knows how to put profound Ideas in simple language, knows how to reach peo ple where they live and help them as they live. Has the Christian minister anything more valuable or important to offer?" This book Is easy to read and is truly in spiring. "McCalPs Treasury of Needle craft" Is a very large book with the pages filled with beautiful things to make. There are hun dreds of needlecraft designs In ev ery kind of needle work knitting, crocheting, hooking, crewel, and many other kinds of work. A very nice book for a woman who likes to work with her hands. Fulton J. Sheen's new book "God Love You," is his own se lection of the most helpful, Inspir ing passages from his many books. These selections are brief and easy to read. Everyone knows Bishop Sheen for his television and radio programs. This book deals with all the affairs of men, both spiri tually and temporally. Another new novel is Harnett T. Kane's, "The Smiling Rebel." This is the story of Belle Boyd, the most glamorous spy of the Civil War. Harnett Kane Is the author CEASE-FIRE JERUSALEM, OPI Egyptian and Israeli forces complied Tues day night with a cease-fire ordered by U.N. truce observers after shooting at each other most of the day across the Gaza strip border. Liberace Not' Discouraged' By Low Box Office Showing Br ALINE MOSBY 1'nlled Press Hollywood Writer HOLLYWOOD (UP) Liberace's first starring movie is not smash ing box office records so far, he admitted today. But the pianist served notice he's "not discour aged" and is forging ahead with his film career. When L 1 b e r a c e's "Sincerely Yours" opened around the coun try, some experts predicted movie goers would line up around the block. They did for premieres when Liberace, teeth and all, showed up in his sheared white beaver coat. After that ticket sales faltered. But Liberace defended his art to day as more popular with families in smaller towns than with the big city sophisticates. "It's a little early in the game to come to a final conclusion about the outcome of the picture," the frank, friendly entertainer said at his San Fernando Valley home. "It has not been nationally re leased, yet all these reports are being printed about the bad busi ness. We expect good business in small towns and In neighborhood theaters. We've always appealed to the family trade. "After all," he added, "the pic ture cost only $1,100,000. That's not a high budget. I predict It'll make four million I'll get two million, and Warners will get two." Ads for the movie at first showed Liberace In his familiar TV pose, elbow resting on his piano. These were changed to show him peer ing through binoculars as he does In the movie (one columnist sniped: "Liberace is looking for an audience.") The story of Belle is an fnteresting one. She finally fell in love with a union soldier, which did add complications to her life. This book can be added to the list of Civil War books that have been published tlie last few years. "One More River to Cross" by Winalee Gentry is the story of her life with her husband who is en gaged in construction work. There are, of course, many moves, and a host of difficulties, but she man ages to add a great deal of gaiety, and a pioneer spirit to her life story, A book of Interest to men is, "Football's Greatest Coaches," and the story of the plays that made them famous. . "Jack Warner's only worry was that I would become discouraged,", he said. "But my TV and nightclub' career started slowly. It took me a good 10 years to build myself up in clubs.
