Sueer Ray Robinson will be fighting the past as well as the present when he climbs Into the ring Friday night. Hts opponent will be Boso Olson, the man from whom he hopes to regain the middleweight cham pionship of the world. But Sugar Ray also must beat the ancient boxing adage that "they never come back.' Nobody ever has. None" outside the heavyweight division ever has come back even far enough from retirement to merit a shot at the title. In this one instance, the Hsriem dyna miter has shattered precedent to the lesser divisions. Bat not even among the heavy weights from John L. Sullivan through the likes- of Gentleman Jim Corbett, Bob Fitssimmons, Jim Jeffries and Joe Louis were they able to recapture the title thev had lost or given up volun tarily. HAD SHOT Those five had their shot. Others like Jack Dempsey, Prima ear ners and Max Schmetirtg. among the heavyweights, never got back that far. Nor, In the lighter divisions, did such as light heavyweight cham pion Paul Berlenbaeh; middle weight kings Billy Fspke, Mickey Walker, , Vince Dunee, Ceferino Garcia or Jake La Motto; welter weight champions Pete Latso, Fritsie Zivie or Marty Servo; lightweight rulers Bat Nelson, Ad Wolgast, Willie Ritchie, Benny Leonard, Al Singer, Tony Canzon eri. Lew Ambers, Bob Montgom ery or Beau Jack; featherweight bosses Benny Bass or Bat Satta lino, or bantamweight Panama Al Brown, They all tried, for one reason or another. For a very few it was boredom and the personal thought that they still were as good as ever. For most of them li was the need for money. This, tt is said. is Robinson's excuse and need. TITLE SHOT Look merely, at .the ones who made it back to the Hue shot. The great John L. had been ortt two years when he came back and was kayoed by Corbett. Gentiemsm Jim tried it three times and was flattened by Fitzsimmons after 16-month layoff; by Jeffries after a two-year retirement, and again by Jeffries after a tares-year lay off. Fitssimmons tried after a Ifve- year retirement, and called It quits alter a no decision bout with an unknown. Jeffries waited six ytars and was flattened . by Jack John. son. Louis lost to Ezzard Charles after 19 months of inactivity and wound up as cannon fodder for Rocky Mtreiano. ' . ' The periods of retirement var ied in the cases of all these cham pions who attempted a. comeback. Mickey Walker was inactive only eight months, yet even in that, ortei time he had "had It," servo, wan ed only a year, but was booed his second attempt. oporxs i World - ! Legal Notice o06 So. 6th Ph. S124 By FARL WRIGHT I'KHed Press Sports Writer Paul Brown probably won't be picked as the National Football League's coach of the year this season because folks are surprised only when his Cleveland Browns lose but he had to do some fancy shuffling to win his loth straight pre division title. When the 19SS season began, Cleveland was the special target for every rival because It was the defending league champion. And Brown's problems included: 1. Billy Reynolds and Cnet Han titer., two tap - notch halfbacks, were in the service. 2. Tommy Catiin, the former Oklahoma star, also was In the service. S. Tony Adamle. an expert line backer who came out of retire ment to help Cleveland clinch the 1954 Eastern Division title before! suffering a broken teg, had de cided to concentrate on his medi cal studies. 4. Kurt Burris, the Oklahoma All-America Cleveland had draft ed No. 1 last January to bolster its linebaeking, decided to play in Canada. EXPERIENCE 5. Rookie Sam Palumbo of Notre Dame, the team's No. I linebacker, had virtually no previous experi ence at this vital defensive posi tion. 6. Of the team's rookie hopefuls, only Palumbo, Bob Smith of Neb raska and Charley Weber of West Chester Teachers made the squad. Of the JS players. If sere "old men" between M and 34 years of age. 7. Otto Graham, who came out of retirement just before the cam paign opened, played pooriy in Cleveland's opening loss, to Wash ington. - - Shortly before the season began. Brown ran out of healthy half backs and had to shift Fred Mor rison from fullback to halfback He got a lucky break when he ob tained fullback Ed ModzelewsM from Pittsburgh. He switched tackle Bob Gsln to middle guard. He moved Mike McCormack, one of the league's top middle guards IhsI season, to offensive right tackle. McCormack'a blocking became ' the key that made Morrison and ModzelewsM the league's best 14 S running punch this year. ; DIVISION TITLE i After completing the shuffling Brown said early in the season i he believed the team which suf- j fcred the least Injuries probably j would win the Eastern Mile.
