DECEMBER S, 1855 Prosecution Says Abbott Guilt Sure By GLENN STACKHOUSE United Preai Staff Correspondent OAKLAND (UP) The prosecu tion claimed today It has already presented enough evidence to prove Burton W. Abbott guilty of murder "beyond any doubt." But even no, Olst. Atty. J. Frank Coakley prepared to call a noted . criminologist to the stand to pro 's vide the "exclamation point" 10 r bis case. The criminologist, Dr. Paul Kirk of the University of California, Is expected to testify that a fragment of Stephanie Bryan's dress was found In Abbott's car. Abbott Is on trial for kidnaping and murdering the 14-year-old Berkeley schoolgirl on April 28. Her body was found near his mountain cabin on July 20. Her assailant had beaten her to death. To lay the groundwork for Kirk's testimony, Coakley prepared to re call an Important witness to the stand. He was Inspector Charles o Meara of the Berkeley Police Department, the man who co ordinated the Investigation of the case. O'Meara will be asked to identify the fragment. He will probably ay it was from the slain girl's skirt. And Kirk will then tell where It was found. Kirk Is expected to take the stand tomorrow. Another witness to be recalled Is Mrs. Charles S. Bryan, Steph anie's mother. It will be her heartrending task to Identify the clothing taken from Stephanie's way aiter it was found In Its hallow grave. Mrs. Bryan has already looked at the clothing. This was to lessen the shock that would have come If she had to examine the gar ments publicly for the first time lnce her daughter vanished. Coakley said, that even without Klrk'i testimony, he thought his case against Abbott was proved. He pointed to the testimony of witnesses who placed Abbott in Berkeley on the afternoon of April 2 and near the corner where Stephanie was last seen; and to witnesses who told of seeing a man resembling Abbott struggling with girl resembling Stephanie on Tunnel Road. He also pointed to the fact that some of her belongings turned up In the basement of Abbott's Ala meda home and that her body was found near his cabin. Abbott has admitted being at the cabin April j Planes Seek Lost Fliers HAMILTON AFB (UP) Air Force and civilian rescue planes resumed search at dawn today for a light plane and two men missing three days on a flight from Reno to Oakland. The missing men were Identified as Robert G. Holsten, 29. San Francisco, the pilot, and his pas. scnger. E. Woods (or Woodson) Oakland. Holsten. a pilot for American Air Service of Oakland, and his passenger took off from Reno in the Beechcralt Bonanza at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and business asso ciates said they planned to arrive In Oakland the same day. They filed no flight plan. Mai. William McDonald of the 41st Air Rescue 8quadron said the plane was not reported missing un til yesterday. The search was concentrated In Northern California and Nevada over the route a light plane nor mally would follow In crossing the Sierra. County Fair End Asked PORTLAND W Dissolution of the Multnomah County fair was proposed Sunday by an official of Wood Village, the community where Multnomah County commls aloners want to locate the new fairgrounds. Robert M, Chrlchton. chairman of the Wood Village planning com mission, suggested that "The people of Multnomah County be given an opportunity to vote on the dissolution of the county fair with the proceeds of auch liquidation to go to the county school tunu." Other officials of the residential area now under development also protested location of the fair grounds In the Wood Vlllago area. Mayor Paul G. Sherman said the district had been planned and zoned for residential construction. He added that county officials had not consulted him before taking options on the 170-acre tract. Sherman was critical of the fair management's proposal to rent part of the area for dog racing. He said commissioners were "at tempting to foster private Interest in dog and horse racing, cloaked In the mantle of public profit." He also challenged the right of the county "to engage in or foster private enterprise even through rentals."
