Islands, just as it did Thor Heyer-
dahl and his expedition aboard the
salsa raft Kon-Tikl.

Pistol Trick
Kills Youth
SACRAMENTO (UP) An earlv
morning argument between three
youthful Iriends over religion and
destiny ended in death yesterday
when one placed a revolver to his
Head and pulled the trigger In an
attempt to prove a point.
The one bullet In the revolver
discharged, fatally injuring Druce
McPherson, 18. son of Mr. and
Mrs.Vorman McPherson ol Sacra
mento. The discussion took place at the
home ol Mr. and Mrs. Gordon
Hughes between McPherson,
Thomas Hughes and Robert Dev
lin, Hughes told police the discus
sion took place in his second-floor
bedroom. He said he handed Mc
Pherson the revolver with one bul
let In the cylinder, telling him:
"II you think you're right, pull
the trigger."
McPherson put the revolver to
his temple and lired.
Hughes is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Gordon Hughes and Devlin is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur C
Devlin. Both the elder Hughes and
Devlin are prominent Sacramento
attorneys.

Polled Herelord Association re
ported today Its second annual
range bull sale during the week
end averaged $387 each for 60 head
of cattle.
The average was one of the low
est recorded in the association's
history.
Top price was $1210 lor the re
aerve champion, PLR Royal Ad
vance 10th owned by Elm Lane
Ranch of Fresno. The animal was
purchased by Jack Simpson of
Auberry.

Alcatraz
Inmate Slain
SAN FRANCISCO (UP) FBI
agents quizzed hardened convicts
in Alcatraz Prison today in an
attempt to learn what lay behind
the fatal stabbing- of a convicted
rapist.
The victim was Sidney Moore,
31, Washington. D.C. He died in
the prison hospital at 6 p.m. yes
terday of stab wounds in the ab
domen and chest. He had been
knifed eight hours earlier.
Warden Paul J. Madigan said
Moore's assailant was James A.
Bullock, 36. of Louisiana, a con
victed murderer. a
Word of the slaying in the na
tion s toughest prison got out when
prison authorities notified the cor
oner's office to meet the prison
launch at 8:30 p.m. and pick up
the- body of the slain man.
Madigan said Moore and Bullock
got into a fight yesterday morning
while 476 prisoners were taking
their morning exercise. Four
guards who were on duty In the
yard at the time pulled the two
men apart. ..
Madigan said none of the guards
knew what started the fight or
where Bullock got the knife he
used. Presumably it was one he
had fashioned in secret and hidden
on his person or m his cell, no
mean feat on the security conscious
"Rock."
The FBI began an Immediate in
vestigation of the case, but said
"we cannot divulge any details at
this, time."

Uranium Claims
Staked In Crook

of additional uranium claims have
been staked out in southwestern
Crook County, the county clerk's
office here has reported.
Three of the new filings were
by Cottage Grove residents: Ennis
L. Keele, Lawrence E. Kcele,
Alfred Howard and Noah Cosner.
Earlier. Metal Services of Rose
burg, which is conducting mining
operations and tests in the area,
made optimistic reports on their
findings.

Mike A. Montoya, about 30, and
Mrs. Leta Owaltney, 32, both of
Reedley. were killed late yesterday
when Montoya lost control of his
car on a curve near the Kings
River Bridge at Reedley and
slammed broadside Into an auto
mobile operated by Mrs. Qwalt-
ney's husband, David, 42.
Paul De Bore. Fresno, who
would have celebrated his. 15th
birthday today, was killed last
night when he was struck by an
automobile while pushing his bi
cycle In a crosswalk at a Fresno
Intersection. Police jailed William
T. 8weet 64, i also ol Fresno, on
suspicion of manslaughter, charg
ing him with driving his car
through a red light.
Guiseppe .Cavallero, 71, rural
Madera, died Saturday when he
was thrown from his pickup truck
in a collision with a car. The acci
dent occurred at a Modern inter
section. ,
