United Frees guff Correapondent PARIS (UP) Premier Edgar Faure disbanded the French Na tional Assembly today in a con troversial political stroke that abruptly ended Its threat to un seat him as premier. The assembly ceased to exist at 1 a.m. (1 a.m. EST) with publica tion of the decree in the "Journal Officiel." France immediately prepared for elections on New Year's Day. Faure called press conference for today to explain bis move which was condemned by his poli tical enemies as a "coup de force' riding roughshod over U:e will of Parliament. The Council of State, France's supreme constitutional court, called a hurried session to try to find a loophole to prevent the elec tions falling on such an unpopular date the morning after foi 40 Xmas Program Set In Merrill MERRILL At a regular meet ing of tha Merrill Volunteer Fire Department Monday evening, No vember 28, It was decided to con tinue the- Christmas program for less fortunate children. The statement was his. description of events dur ing three years as a prisoner. - The agent's report of the inter view was admitted as evidence during 'the closed session, but Liles' statement was not. Lt. Col. Leslie E. French voters have been per plexed for a week by the rapid fire political moves that exploded into one of the gravest crisis since 1877 when last a Parliament was dissolved by 'such a decree. And their reaction to possibilities of a New Year's election was varied, "Above all I'm a French wom an." said Marcelle Joubert, 45. a blonde tradeswoman. "I'll vote." "To hell with It," said taxi driver Henri Terrine, 65. "I'm not going to spend the best day of the year voting." Dissolution of Parliament was the second time in two days Faure had left the hostile deputies gasp ing. They voted no confidence in his government Tuesday and went home to bed, confident he would resign. But Faure looked up a constitu tional provision which said he could fire Parliament if two prem iers were voted out of office in 18 months. So he announced his decision. The angry assembly members held a series of meetings Thursday and the powerful Socialist Party began a move to recall the cham ber and pass a vote of censure which would mean Faure would have to resign. And although he realized how unpopular a New Year's Day elec tion would be he ordered Presi dent Rene Coty to prepare the decree abolishing Parliament. "Faure and Pierre Mendea France, his most bitter political enemy, agreed for once that the decree Is Issued by the president "but it is the premier who de cides." That was probably the last area of agreement for the two men, once the best of friends, now mor tal enemies. Mendes-France called a meeting of the Radical Socialist Party and its leaders decided by a vote of 19 to 8 to expel Faure from the party. That action is not final until the entire party mem bership votes on it. Faure's abrupt move which he had hoped to postpone for a week also ended Parliament's chances of revising the unpopular 1951 election law by" which small par ties can team up in alliances against the big parties. Faure was angry at the as sembly for its failure to take strong and resolute action on any decision before it. But his political enemies said he would defeat his own pur pose that elections under the 1951 law would return the same assembly members. Under the French constitution Faure would remain in office until after the elections and the new as sembly meets the third Thursday after elections probably Jan. 19 and chooses a new premier. Yreka, was named this week as business administrator for the Mount Shasta Community Hospital on behalf of the group of six doc tors who recently purchased the modern and fully equipped hospital Plane Victim Hunt Resumed The search for the bodies of two California residents, lost No vember 13 in the crash of a pri vate plane off the coast of Mon terey County, is to oe resumed. Word that the search will be con tinued was received here by Mrs. Anne Goucher of Klamath Falls, whose daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs, Robert Duncan lost their lives. Mrs. Goucher returned this week from San Mateo. Mrs. Duncan died a short time after being taken from the water by crew members of a rescue ves sel. The body of her husband and Donald B. Gordon have not been recovered. The fourth passenger in the plane, Mrs. Donald Oordon was seriously. Injured. V The two couples were en route home from Riverside, California, where they had attended an Air Patrol meeting. Both men were expert pilots. The plane crashed in heavy weather seven miles off Cape San Martin. All four persons were alive when sighted by a Navy vessel. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan had two young sons, Robert D. (UP) Search parties were hastily organized late today to hunt for an elderly woman missing in dense brush south of here since Sunday evening. Bandon police identified the wo man as Mrs. Lily Downey, 14. She was believed to be from "some where in the East," and had come to Oregon to visit relatives. Police said the woman got off A bus from Portland Sunday, and started to walk to the home of a relative, Claude Beoff, who lived south of town. She was last seen walking along Bill's Crick Road. Bandon police said the woman had a,'so become lost while staying briefly In Portland. Portland police put her on the bus to Bandon. Curtice, denied today that the General Motors Corp. has resorted) to unfair or questionable business practices to become the world's largest Industrial concern. The president of General Motors told Senate investigators that the giant auto firm's success is due largely to superior management making the most of the nation's tremendous economio growth In the past 35 years. "I know of no management or ganization that has a higher stand ard of business ethics, a greater sense of public responsibility or a more genuine regard for the equi ties of the various groups with which we have contact customers, employes, suppliers, dealers and shareholders," Curtice said In a 97-page statement prepared for presentation to the Senate Monop oly Subcommittee. For the past four weeks, the sub committee has been making a "case study" of General Motors to determine Its effect on the na tion's economy. Most of the previous testimony has been unfavorable to General Motors. Numerous witnesses have charged the giant concern used un fair or questionable practices to dominate allied fields, as well as the. auto Industry. A parade of disfranchised deal era Wednesday and yesterday charged that General Motors had tossed them aside because they didn't sell enough cars to satisfy Curtice and other top GM officials. Some testified that Curtice per sonally turned them, down when they appealed to him in Detroit. One such dealer, Lee C. Ander son of Lake Orion, Mich., testified that Curtice called him "a Red" because of his vigorous opposition to a GM policy of selling autos at cost price to foremen and some other factory employes. Others said they lost their Iran chises after refusing factory de mands that they make large ex pendltures on dealer plant expan sion, advertising and other pro grams designed to Increase sales. The proposed freeway, for the most part, would follow the present Highway 99 route, but many curves would be eliminated. The state, at state expense, pro poses to make such changes ef fecting county roads In the area as are necessary In the construc tion of the freeway and submitted an agreement to the board request, ing approval, Siskiyou County will receive eon. trol and maintenance over, each of the relocated or reconstructed roads and accept control and main, tenance over frontage roads upon notification from the state that tha road construction changea have been made, except with regard to the portions of road incorporated into the freeway system.
