NEW BOOKS ON THE DESK By ADDIE MAE NIXON CITV LIBRARIAN There are so many new books on my desk this morning it is hard to know which ones I should tell you about. One of the greatest novels pub' llshed this (all is "Andersonville" by McKinlay Kantor. This book of many pages, though a book of fie tlon, is presented as an accurate history of the Andersonville Pris on located in Georgia during the Civil War. This prison was ad ministered by an officer who en Joyed seeing people suffer. The author tells the effect this terrible prison had on the lives of many people, southerner and northerner alike. The reader is Interested, but sometimes horrified. Rose FHanken's new novel, "In timate Story" tells the story of a middle aged widow trying to re adjust her life. Her child Is mar rled and suddenly she finds her life at loose ends. The book will Interest many women. "Inside the Space Ships" by George Adamskl will be welcomed by the readers of his first book, "Flying Saucers Have Landed." Early In 104? some Bedouin boys hunting a lost goat, found some old clay Jars that held ancient manuscripts. Edmund Wilson's new book, "The Scrolls From The Dead Sea," tells about these man' uscrlpts and the effect he thinks they will have on Bible study. "The Plums Hang High," by Gertrude B. Finney is a novel of a young English couple In the mid dle eighties, who come to the United States to seek their fortune on a farm. The young wife, a member of a wealthy family, has never washed a garment, or cooked a tneol. This is her story, and of how she found the cour age to meet the demands of fron tier life. John Whcclock Freeman has put out a beautiful new book on "Sports Cars.'! His sub-title Is, "A Lavishly Illustrated. Flrst-Hand Report on the World's Newest and Most Distinctive Automobiles." It la one of the most beautiful books published this fall, and besides all the beautiful plcturos of the cars themselves there are pictures of the engines with descriptions. This is surely a book that men Inter ested In these cars will take to their hearts. Wl Fear that the United States may wreck Canada's ambition to harness the fast-flowing Yukon River as- part of a huge Northwestern power project was voiced Monday before the Gordon Economic Commission. Northwest Power Industries Ltd., the Ventures-Frobisher company working on Yukon -Natl Klver power plants, said it is proposing the Nass River as the first-stage development because it sees as yet no clear road In getting the Yukon project actually started. The Yukon cuts through the International border between the Yukon and Alaska and Hows to the Bering 8ea. The Nass, located In Upper British Columbia, flows south within British Coluinble boundaries. No international prob lems are Involved, the company said.. County Groups Plan Election WEED Siskiyou County Super visor S. C. "Clint" Jackson of Edgewood, vice president of the Northern County Supervisors As sociation, has been nominated to succeed President C. A. Fttzpat- rick, Alturas. Homer O. Parker, Butte County, was nominated by the nominating committee for Jackson's vice presidential post; and James C. ' Coleman, Quincy was nominated for rentention as treasurer. Nominations may be made also from the floor December 17 dur ing the second day of the assoc iation's annual meeting to be held in Redding. The boards of super- visors of the nine northern coun ties will at that time customarily announce the selection of one of their members to represent the county as an association director. Directors and the mew officers take office January 1. The new board of directors will select the secretary, a post held for the last several years b-, T. L. Stanley, Redding; and the president elect will name the committees tor the coming year. The nominating committee re ported to the Board of Directors November 12 at the group's last meeting of this current year, held in Redding. In October, Jackson, Siskiyou County supervisor of the third dis trict, was appointed to two state positions, chairman of the health and hospital committee of the County Supervisors Association; and as a member of the. board of directors of the County Supervis ors Association of California to which he was elected at the an nual supervisor's convention held in Monterey. But the Yukon would be by far the biggest project, ultimately pro ducing some 4,600.000 horsepower against 465,000 for the Nass. North west Power has been working on the Yukon project for the last three years. It expects to complete its engineering and survey studies In 1958 and b?gin designing a possible power plant. Studies on the Nas have started only this year. Field surveys may start in 1M. "The economy feasibility of the Yukon Kivcr project is becoming established and investigations made to date of the Nass Itiver area show most promising possi bilities," the company said.
