THUIffDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1955 HERALD AND NEWS. KLAMATH FALUS, OREGON PAGE TWENTY-ONE o "tN '"'-v' v Parakeets If you had no tecih, yew would be handicapped when meal tunc rolls around. That's what happens to your parakeet when he Is not supplied with an ample amount of proper gravel, according to Q. Buell Culver of branch's Pet Bird Institute. Your bird eats bits ol gravel Uiat he uses in his giz zard to grind food inio a soft, easily-digested torm. Research has discovered that grh should supply "teeth" lor the bird but not extra minerals. All mineral supplemenuuon. with the possible exception ot calcium; may or may not be included in ilio food ration, but it is preferred that it be supplied separately in tho lorm of cuulcbone. In this way. the bird may select calcium at wiil in order to balance the ration. Sonic fanciers say that para keets should have brown gravel rather than the white- ittveu to canaries. The brown gravel con- tnms iron and oilier minerals There seems to be nc justification lor this. Iron is a trace element that is readily supplied by the food portions of the proper parakeet diet. No supplementation should be required except In cases of anemia ana certain other. Infections. Ex cessive irons supplementation may lead to disturbances in the nu trition of the bird. Using a gravel with oyster shells or charcoal Is debatable. With cuttleUme available, oyster shells arc unnecessary since cuttlebone supplies the bird's need for cab cium and provides means for sharpening Its beak. A CHEESE TRAY, flanked with shiny fresh fall fruit is an important addition to your holiday informal buffet snack table. Interesting slices (plain or faneyl, wedges, cubes, finger and tri angles of cheese speared with party picks create an especially pretty picture. A cheese tile or cheea-cutting board placed nearby with a cheese knife will provide opportunities for each . guest ti cut for himself the siie pieces of cheese he prefers. An assortment of salty crackers and qU'ses of chilled cider are aood accomoaniments for- the cheese trav.
