OREGON PAGE SZVEN & Faure Battles For Election PARIS (UP) Premier Edgar Faure, went' before the Senate to day to fight for his December elec tion bill arid early forecasts said he would be routed, plunging France Into Its 21st postwar politi cal crisis. Senate Speaker Gaston Monner- Army Finishes 'Sagebrush' FT. POLK, La. W Zero hour came today in the United states' biggest peacetime military maneu versa war same with a pattern strikingly similar to what could happen if Reds break the Korean truce or choose aggression else ' where. Generals disclaimed intention to shape the tactics and theoretical situation in Exercise Sagebrush to any existing condition. But as 140,000 men and 1.200 war- planes poised for the beginning of an "aggressor'' offensive, the pic ture had a grim similarity to that In the Far East. " And here appeared also to be this forwarning to real aggressors: the emphasis this time was on atomic weapons for both air and ground forces.1 The script which set the situation for the huge war game over seven million acres of western Louisiana plains was this: A truce between aggressor and United .States forces had been in existence. Standing between the two forces was a demilitarized tone. To this point, only the 38th Parallel seemed to be lacking to make the picture match Korea The aggressor broke the truce and attacked United States 'forces across the demilitarized zone. This mock war is tactical In na ture, involving no strategic bomb ing missions deep Into a sanctuary land. That too was like Korea. Like the Air Force, the ground . force's emphasis was on switt mo bility and atomic firepower the Corporal guided missile, the Honest John bombardment rocket, the 280 mm. cannon. ville called the 320-member upper chamber to debate the premier's plan to hold nationwide elections Dec. 18 under a modified version of the 1951 voting system. Faure was given little If any chance to push his bill through the Senate although It was approved by the lower house, the National Asembly, In a confidence vote last Saturday. . The Senators objected to Faure's proportional representation plan which means seats In the National Assembly are divided proportional ly if no single party gets a ma jority in the voting. Faure threw out an election rulo allowing small parties to form al liances and swap votes after the elections, which was mainly direct ed against the Communists. The senators feared this would seat 160 Communist deputies n the luture chamber rather than the 94 members the Reds now have. The Senate election committee rejected Faure's bill Monday nignt and introduced a bill of its own calling for adopting of pre-war district voting whereby ballots would be cast for Individual dept ties rather than for party slates. A defeat for Faure in the Senate would not force him out of office. But it would mean a stiff new bat tie in the National Assembly with an increased chance that the Sen ate-sponsored system would be ac cepted this time. The deputies have rejected the district system of voting three times. But it was onlv Communist support that saved Faure on the third vote. Faure's government also faced Internal troubles. The Catholic labor unions decreed a virtual sir blockade of France by extending a strike of ground crews against Paris terminals to out-country airports. Harriman Hedges On Nomination ALBANY. N. Y. ' ( Gov. Averell Harriman said Tuesday that anyone wanting the Demo c r a t i o presidential nomination would have to work for it. And he added: "I'm not going to work for it." In a radio network broadcast (ABC), Harriman also touched on the current Geneva conference and said he considered It "foolish" of Secretary of State Dulles t have been as optimistic as the governor said Dulles had been recently con cerning relations with Russia. As for the Democratic presi dential choice, Harriman said In answer to questions by news com mentator Martin Agronsky: "No one Is going to be offered this nomination." Although he did not say so on the broadcast, Harriman Is known beyond doubt to be willing to take the nomination. Indian burial sites in the Lava Beds National Monument, on Low er Klamath Lake and elsewhere In the Klamath Basin, have been studied by Robert Squier and Cor don Qrosscup. The two have also visited a num ber of private collections of In dian artifacts gathered by local residents. Dozens of small collec tions contain some prize Items, it Is announced by the two students. Among the exhibits are a portion of a bone pendant, said by the students to be worn only by the Eskimos of the north. They also found a rock believed to have been used to weight spears for throwing used by various tribes of men from 1500 B.C. to 5 A D. Squier and Qrosscup plan to re turn here next summer for a tour of the Klamath Indian reserva tion. Small collectors include among others, A. E. Ryckman. John O'Shea. Roscoe Burkhurst and Burris Short. Funeral Held For Crash Victim WEED Funeral services were held Monday November 14 at the Presidio in San Francisco, for Sal. Richard Spangle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Spangle, Gazelle. Spangle was one of six airmen killed when a B-24 bomber crash?,! into Huntington Lake near Fresnr in 1943 while on a winter mission flight. The Spangles were notified last week that the body of their son had been recovered and Identified. The other five crewmen weie found in the wreckage and re moved after the wreckage of the place was discovered when the lake was partlally drained to make repairs to the dam, during the late summer. Full military honors were to be given to those who lost their lives in the crash. Traffic Slowed On Pacific SALEM (AP) Traffic on the Pacific Highway through the Sis kiyou Mountains and through Mc Kenzie Pass was slowed Tuesday by heavy snow, the Oregon High way Commission reported. Motorists were advised to carry chains on both routes. Many other points reported Icy spots as temperatures hit a new tow or the season.
