Housewives are irate over the necessity of us ing oil stoves to cook or even to keep warm. The Norwegian economy to a very great degree Is dependent on electric power. Cooking with elec tricity is much more commen in Norway than in most countries. Gas is used hardly at all. New apartment buildings use electricity for heating. Before World War U, Norway had a surplus of electric power. Before and after the .war the gov ernment campaigned to make peo ple use electricity. Now a power shortage is becoming permanent, while postwar buying power has led Norwegians to buy ever more electric stoves, water heaters, re frigerators and washing machines. An inter-municipal power author ity distributes power to various areas according to need. Unfor tunately this inter-municipal au thority has sold considerably more power than it can deliver. To keep vital industry going, power con sumption has been cut 25 per cent. Street lighting has been reduced or abandoned entirely. A brown out has been followed by a com plete general switchoff at least two hours every night, vital industry excepted. , , . To keep warm, Norwegians are buying oil stoves. To cook their meals, many have to buy email camp stoves. The government has been forced to liberate halt a million kroner (about $72,000)-in hard currency for the import of stoves mainly from Great Britain and Sweden. The only Norwegian manufacturer of, oil stoves has sold his produc tion for a halt year In the future.
