OREGON PAGE THIRTEEN ML fflalioB Face Srid Owl 'IT Tangles ' With LC Coach Rex Hunsaker's Oregon Tech Owls meet competition m their own class this weekend, but the picture remains dark as the Mile High Campus eleven travels for a grid encounter with the Low er Columbia Junior - College Red Devils., i ; ' The Saturday night game at Longview,-Washington, will be the next to last action of the seasot! for the 6wls, who have yet to claim their first victory in seven outings. But in the seven games to date, this will be the first fray for the Owls against competition of their own caliber. So far ihey ranked junior colleges and tough four-year schools in the Oregon Collegiate Conference. Hunsaker said this week he was greatly pleased by the showing of his club last Saturday. The Oris lost a 20-7 OCC contest to O egon College of Education, but Hunsak er related the Tech chargers put out all they had in an effort to knock off the conference leaders and probable champions. The 0-0 halftime score and strong first half defense staged by the Owl? were the bright spots found by the OTI coaching staff In last week's game. , 7 This week, the Owls face a com mon foe in Lower Columbia, but the Red Devils are reportedly stronger than last year and ready to avenge the 1954 thrashing ad ministered by the Mile High grid ders. The score of last year's , meeting favored the Owls 52-18. Oregon Tech and Lower Columbia have been matching ball clubs since 1950. In this time Tech has won four and lost none.- According to sources close to the Red Devil camp, this may be the year LCJC has been waiting lor, and If this is the case, the Owls are In trouble. Lower Columbia will have seven lettermeu in the starting lineup when the two clubs meet, remembering last year's pasting handed out by the '54 OTI club. . So far this season Lower Colum - bla has split even In six games. The Red Devils have won from Greys Harbor 7-9, Olympic 7-0 and Oregon College of Education 14-0. The three losses suffered by LC so far this season have been dealt by Everett JC, Yakima JO and Wenatchee JC. Tiger Jones, John Saxton Meet Tonight OAKLAND, Calif. (UP) Ralph "Tiger" Jones, who shook up Ray Robinson's comeback plans last January, seeks to do the same thing to Johnny Saxton tonight when he tangles with the former welterweight champ in a nationally televised 10-rounder at the local au ditorium. Jones, a familiar face on every body's TV screen, scored a unani mous decision over Robinson and left many writers convinced that the former welter and middle weight kingpin had lost it during his two years as a night club per lormer. But since then, Robinson has fought his way back into a title match Dec. 9 with champion Oarl 'Bobo' Olson. Now Saxton is in ' the clutch against the same Jones, who comes In all the time and is very ef fective at close quarters. Johnny won the world welterweight title from Kid Gavilan in a highly dis puted decision late In 1954. Then he was fluttened In the 14th round by Tony DeMarco last April who In turn bowed to Carmen Basilio, the current welter king. Saxton is in line for a title go with the winner of the Nov. 30 re-match between Basilio and De ' Marco, but a loss to Jones could smash his plans. Phil Tarasovic, Yale's football captain and left tackle, said last week "we'd . rather beat Army than- win the Ivy League cham pionship." The Ells, of course, did upset the Cadets, and it was Tara sovic's great line play that helped get the Job done. ' Off that performance, Tarasovic today was named the Associated Press lineman of the week. The Yale line gave Army no end of trouble last Saturday in the Yale Bowl, chopping down Army backs with such force that the Ca dets tumbled five times. Twice it was Tarasovic, a 21-year-old sen ior from Bridgeport, Conn., who flopped on the loose ball. One of the recoveries set up Yale's first touchdown. The other choked an Army drive late in the third quarter as the Elis pulled It off 14-12. In the second quarter, the 6-4, 215-pound tackle smothered a fum ble by Army's Pat Uebel on the Cadet's 10. Two plays later, Yale scored and took a 7-6 lead. In the third period, as Army started a march, Uebel again fum bled and again it was Tarasovic who recovered, this time on the Army 38. Tarasovic, who says he "might consider professional football," Is the only two-year letterman on the Yale squad. He was an alternate tackle as a sophomore and last year toojc over as a fulltlme regu lar. Other linemen who gained con sideration for this week's award were Jerry Tubbs, Oklahoma, who won the third award of the season; Jerry Walker, Texas Tech; Pat Blsceglia, Notre Dame; Dennis Ooehrlng, Texas A&M; Hal Bur nine, Missouri; Jack O'Toole, Wichita; Charles Krueger, Texas A&M; Forest Gregg, Southern Methodist, and Johnny Tatum, Texas. " In the past season, Moro has displayed a brilliant defense, but has lacked a potent scoring punch according to head Ray Howie, who is in his' first year as head Husky coach. The Moro coach reported that defense is definitely the strong point of his club. On the other side of the fence, Malln's defense has been a vital clog in the Mustang's 7-0-1 record this yer, but the offense with John son, Steyskal, Norm Ollva, Melvin Paris and Jim Johnson in the driv ers seat has been the prime source ol victory for Conroy's chargers.
