Senator Lehman Confident Of Federal Disaster Bill
WASHINGTON AH Sen. Leh-I
man D-NY expressed confidence
today that seme kind of federal
disaster insurance bill will be
ready for Congress next year.
Lehman criticized administra
tion ofiicials, however, for what he
said was their "failure" to make
specific recommendations at this
time on such a program.
The hearing continues today with
Sen. Payne (R-Mainei and repre
sentatives from the Small Business
Administration and the Depart
ments of Agriculture and Interior
on the list of witnesses.
It will resume Thursday in New
York City and go later to Bos
ton. Providence, R. I., and Hart
ford. Conn.
The August floods along the
Eastern Coast were the immedi
ate cause of current talk on some
sort o! lederul disaster insurance
to fill the gap where commercial
insurers generally do not operate.
Lehman said there was no in
tention for the federal government
to set up competition against the
private insurance companies.
"If we're going to put in all the
provisions demanded by private
insurance companies.
"If we're going ho put in all the
provision! demanded by private in
surance companies." he said. "I
don't think we're likely to get any
Insurance. I mean, after all, the

of the Budget Bureau, said yes

More power, smart Starfire styl
ing and new smoothness and ef-j
ficiency in an automatic trans
mission give Oldsmobile for 195G
outstanding appearance and per
formance in its advance to a high
er place in automobile popularity.
In announcing the 1956 Oldsmobile,
J. F. Wolfram, Oldsmobile general
manager and vice president of
General Motors, points out that it
couples the "Rocket" T-350 engine
with Jetaway Hydra-Matlc trans
mission to achieve new standards
of performance and efficiency.
The 1956 Oldsmobiles go on dis
play Thursday, November 3, at the
Dick B. Miller Co.. Seventh and
Klamath Avenue.
Especially eye-catching is the
new Oldsmobile front end, with an
airfoil type grille patterned after
the experimental Starfire and Del
ta and recessed in an oval be
tween the massive upper and low
er bumper bars. Rectangular park
ing lights are incorporated In the
outer extremities of the lower
bumper bar and are protected by
the overhang of the upper bar.
Small chrome block letters which
spell out the Oldsmobile name add
an interesting motif to this dis
tinctive front end.
The popular low silhouette and
panoramic windshield are retained
being enhanced with new fender,
hood and bumper designs. New
flair-away fenders are an advanced
version of the sweep-cut fenders

attractive Starfire styling. The side
moulding treatment on the "
series is distinctively different
from the '88' and Super W mod
els. Nineteen standard colors and
155 recommended two-tone com
binations provide the greatest va
riety in the division's 58-year his
tory.
Prom an engineering standpoint,
horsepower Is raised to 240 in the
"Rocket" T-350 engine which pow
ers the '98' and Super '88' cars.
The T-350 designation indicates
350 pound-feet of torque, or turn
ing effort at the crankshaft, at
an engine speed of 2,800 r.p.m.
Compression ration is 9.25 to 1 in
all 1956 "Rocket" engines. The
1956 Series "88 Rocket" has a larg
er dual carburetor, and develops
siu-n.p.
Three series of cars In 13 body
types are offered by Oldsmobile
for 1956. There are four Fisher
body types in the luxurious "98"
series four-door Holiday sedan.
Holiday coupe, four-door sedan- and
Starfire convertible. The high per
formance super '88' series pre
sents the Holiday sedan, Holiday
coupe, two-door sedan, convertible
coupe and four-door sedan. In the
budget-priced "88" series are the
Holiday sedan, two-door sedan,
four-door sedan and Holiday coupe.
Jetaway Hydra Matic Drive,
which is making its bow in 1956
Oldsmobile, will be standard equip
ment on the Super "88" and "98"
series. Hydra-Matic Super Drive
is optional at cx(ra cost on the
"88" series. The -Jetaway Hydra
Matic introduced a new second
fluid coupling in. the drive train
that blends the changes in the
gear ratios into a single contin
uous flow of power. Shifts are
smoother than ever before attained
in an automatic transmission and
are barely perceptible. As an add
ed convenience, a parking lock
operated with the shift lever is
incorporated In the transmission.
Safety is a continuing consider
ation with Oldsmobile and has
been since electric headlamps and
the self-starter first were installed.
It is the constant aim of Olds
mobile engineers to design safety
features into the car. Among these
have been the all-steel body, four
wheel brakes, safety glass and the
panoramic windsheild for better
vision. Built-in safety improve
provements are the objective in
each new model.
