Dr. Adler cited two cases in; which scientific investigation cleared one man and convicted another of murder. WOMAN KILLED In the first instance, a man walked into the Klamath County sheriff's office a few years ago and reported his wife had killed herself with a revolver in a tent house near Buck Lake, northwest of Keno. Then . woman on the floor of the tent and the revolver with which she apparently had been shot In a holster hanging on the wall. The officers Immediately conclud ed the woman couldn't have shot herself and then put the gun In the holster. The husband claimed after he fcund his wife's body, he went out side the tent with the gun and fired three shots to attract help. When no one responded, he said he put the gun In the holster and drove to the sheriff's office: Dr. Adler proved the husband's story was true with a nitrate test on the dead woman's hands which showed powder marks. In the second case, a man claimed he was carrying a shot gun out of a burning house and It accidentally discharged killing his wife. The man said he was only a few feet from his wife when the shotgun charge hit her. By the shot pattern on the body and testing the gun. Dr. Adler prqved the weapon was fired at least 30 feet from the woman. The husband was convicted of murder. LIVED IN MINING CAMP Dr. Adler was born Oct. 3, 1898 in Cambridge. Massachusetts. He spent his early life in a remote pold mining settlement. 100 miles by mule train from Weaverville, California. The doctor was unable to attend elementary or high school. When he enrolled at the University of Ore gon as a biology student, he had to make up his high school work as well as carry the regular col lege course. The studying he had done for years in a remote moun tain cabin stood him in good stead. Before he began his higher edu cation, Dr. Adler with his father, Rudolph Adler and his brother, Arthur Adler, enlisted In the Army during World War I. He was kept from going overseas by a men ingitis epidemic which swept the Presidio at San Francisco. After receiving a degree in bio logy, Dr. Adler returned to the University of Oregon on a schol arship and obtained his medical degree. He has since practiced In Klnmath Falls. Dr. and Mrs. Adler have two daugters, Mrs. Madelon Petroff of Portland, a concert pianist, and Sheila Adler, a student at South ern Oregon College.
