rruUAY, OCTOBER 7, '1 955 PAGE FOURTEEN HfcKALU AND NKWS. KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON Navy Explains Shaft Program NEW YORK W The New York Times said today the propeller shafts of 10 new Navy ships are being replaced at a cost ot several million dollars. A Washington dispatch to the Times By Hanson w. Baldwin also said that a total of 21 new naval vessels are affected by a change in propeller shaft specifications. The Navy was quoted as saying that the extensive propeller-shaft ing replacement program was de cided upon early last summer after a failure In the frigate Norfolk, a new 6,500-ton ship The story gave this account of the mishap: The Norfolk lost a propeller and part of a propeller shall at sea last spring and the turbine driving this shaft, suddenly relieved of its load, "ran away" and virtually exploded. The investigation that followed apparently was not able to deter mine definitely whether the shaft had broken or the loss of the screw had caused the shaft failure. The story gave those details of the replacement program: Among the ships Bflectcd are the aircraft carrier Forrestal, the largest warship In the world, which was commissioned last Saturday ot Portsmouth, Va., and her sister ehlp Saratoga, which is to Dc christened at the Now York Naval Shipyard in Brooklyn next batur dav. jive new frigates and three new destroyers, all of them recently completed, also face reshaping. In addition, the propeller-shaft specifications have been changed for three more Forrestal-class air craft carriers and eight additional destroyers which are still under construction. Truman Backs Stevenson BOSTON 1M Former President Harry S. Truman said yesterday Adlal Stevenson Is "a friend" and Averell Harrlman's age 64 is not too old for a president but he evaded the .question of whom he will support for the Democratic nomination. He told a news conference his presidential preference will come to light at the Democratic National Convention, where he expects to be part of the Missouri delegation, He said Democratic chances "have always been good," and added, "I'm an optimist,." At a rally ot the Combined Jewish Aypeal last night, 11-year-old Truman told a crowd of 10,000 that the Near East Is now threat ened by a new danger an arm ament race. The Communist otter to arm Egypt creates, an "alarming situa tion, he sala, which "should serve to warn us and keep us on our guard." The United Btates, he said, should "stand firm with our allies m our announcea intention w pie vent transgression."
