OREGON PAGE THIRTEEN 'SO i' J I THE ONE THOUSANDTH student to register for the fall term at Oregon Technical Institute was Glen Marcum, Nyssa, Oregon, who is studying gunsmithing. Total enrollment announced by Winston Purvine, OTI director, as of Monday, October 3, was 1,019, peak figure for any one term since the college was opened. Present enrollment indicates a probable 1,200 students be fore the end of the year. Largest class enrollment is in diesel technology with 200 students, followed by electronics technology with 120. There are 110 women students on the campus. October 4 was the last day for registering without a $1 per day penalty. Over 90 per cent of the enrollment is from Oregon. I.fl Vice President Nixon "is the easiest Republican lo beat" (or the presi dency but the Democrats will win next year from anybody, says Chairman Paul Butler of the Dem ocratic National Committee. Butler, here for a Jefferson Jackson Day fund-raising dinner, discussed 1958 presidential possi bilities at a press conference. His talk to Die party rally was . con cerned mainly with a plea fJr Democratic unity and with an en dorsement of Sen. Lister Hill for renomlnatlon and re-elction next year. Butler said Nixon would be his choice as "the Republican candi date for president easiest for the Democrats to boat." Butler was here on a swing through the South. He made no direct reference at the dinner to the effort of E. D. Nixon, a Mont gomery Negro, to buy a ticket for the meeting, but he did say he did not know why anyone would think he would not come to Birmingham. Gov. O. Mennen Williams of Michigan decided not to come here tor the dinner after Nixon failed to get a ticket. Birmingham's seg regation laws prohibit Neiroes and white persons from dining to gether In public places. Butler predicted that ,the Solid South, broken in 1948 and 1953 elections, would return solidly to Democratic ranks as a part of a Democratic sweep next year. Butler said the Illness of Presi dent Eisenhower had brought more appeals for readmlssion into the Democratic party than at "any time In 100 years." DAMAGE SUIT LOUISVILLE, Ky.
