Airport Fund Use Reported
Mayor Paul Landry reported to
the city council Monday night that
the municipality lias spent 159.693
lor land adjacent to the airport
needed in construction of the Jet
interceptor base.
According to the mayor. 134
acres of land was purchased. He
also said 19,565 was paid by the
city for restricted easement on 87
ecrcs of land in the same area.
The council was notified that Dr.
John C. Hunt, city dairy and
meat Inspector, was In Hillside
Hospital as the result of three
heart attacks.

Sen. Syminqton (D-Mo) and Rep.
Karsten (DMo) had called for con
tresslohal investigations after a

21 jet fighters costing $28,350,000
which probably never will fly be
cause of insufficient engine power.
Rep. Cannon (D-Mo), chairman
of the Houpe Appropriations Com
mittee, sent a telegram to Secre
tary of the Navy Charles Thomas
demanding an explanation.
The ursl secretary of the Air
Force. Symington said he believed
ihe Navy and Westinghouse Elec
tric Corp., manufacturer of the
engines, shared responsibility for
:he failure of the engines to supply
sufficient power.
But a Westinghouse spokesman
said after publication nf (he storv
Saturday that his firm merely pro
duced the type of engine the Navy
hiid ordered.
Production of the plane. the
Demon F3H-1N. made by the Mc
Donnell Aircraft Corp. of St. Louis,
was halted after 56 were delivered
to the Navy. Six of the planes
crashed, five in tho St. Louis area.

aircraft designed to take off or
land Vertically, yet fly almost l'i
times the speed of sound, were to
be shown to Defense Department
officials Tuesday.
A small-scale model of the pro
posed craft was prepared for the
purpose.
The craft, after vertical takeoff,
would tuck its rotor blades back to
form a sort of tail, somewhat like
that of a shuttlecock, and would
fly forward in level position like
a jet airplane.
Coming in for a landing, the pi-
lot would return power from the
Jet exhaust to the tail rotor, the I
blades would fan out again to pro
vide a helicopter lift, and the craft
would lower gently to the ground, i

the revested Oregon and California
Railroad Grant Lands was $1&,333,.
639.89. The counties receive 75 per
c?nt of this, less J'i million
allocated by the counties for con
struction of access roads to the
timber.
The Bureau of Land Manage
ment, which administers OfcC
lands on a sustained yield basis,
said timber sales in the 1954-55
period totaled 664.600.000 board
feet, compared with 615,100,000 in
1953-54.
BLM Director Edward Woozley
said that based on receipts already
on hand, another record breaking
year is in prospect for 1955-56.
