WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1955 Military Leaders Maintain U,$. Still Has A-Bomb Lead HERALD AND" NEWS. KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON FAGS WASHINGTON ( United States miliuuy duels have decided that this country holds sound lead over Russia in the atomic arms race and can maintain it until I960. They are not at ail sure what wilt happen alter that. As a result, informants said today, yiu finding of ways to pro long this country's superiority in design and production of nuclear weapons, including long-range Tocket missiles, has become a major project. i The White House, the State and Defense departments and, other Doctor Seeks A-Bomb Report WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. -T) A 'nuclear scientist has called upon President Eisenhower to reveal the size of this nation's atcm bomb stockpile In the belief that the revelation "could be a 1 potent force for peace." v Dr. Ralph E. Lapp, director of Nuclear Science Seivice in Wash ington and former consultant to the War II atom-bomb agency, Man hattan District, said the stockpile already "amounts to several tons of TNT for every inhabitant of our planet." ' The world's population Is esti mated at 2'i billion persons. Dr. Lapp said the nlle is so fan tastically large that there is no longer any point in keeping it secret. He spoke yesterday at a convention of the U.S. Tea Assn. Dr. Lapp described a hvdroeen bomb which would produce the same destructive force as 18 mil , lieu tons of TNT. government agencies are at work on it. A report recently completed for President Eisenhower by Dr. James R. Killian Jr president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is now In the hands of Eisennower's scientific advis ers. Hie President himself will study it later. It is concerned with methods of mobilizing the na tion's scientific resources for use in the event of an emergency." While no part of the top-secret document has been made public. it is unaerstooa mat it deals witn the whole field of research and weapons. It ranges from the prob lem of Russia's increasing turnout of younf scientists and engineers to maintaining the lead in produc ing intercontinental missiles. At ine present time a kind 01 atomic stalemate already exists between the world's two greatest powers. -., What the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Eisenhower's leading scientific advisers are reported to fear most s tne possibility that sometime by or- after 1900. the Soviets mlch' develop a new weapon which woulil give tnem tor a time a clear ad vantage over the United States. This would break the stalemate and upset the balance of power. , The President and the National Security Council are understood to believe now that a spectacular Soviet gain in weapons would not necessarily be used by Russia's present leaders to start a military conflict. They could very well use it as the basis ot a mucn tougher and more threatening foreign pol icy, however. Animals Recovered After Zoo Burglary DETROIT UP!
