E. German Woolworth Store Typifies Communism At Fair Kdilur's Note Reinhold Ensz. tin American on the AP staff in Germany, received Russian per mission to visit the 1955 Leipzig fair. Here Is his report. By REINHOLD ENSZ LEIPZIG. East Germany W One way to sum up the Communist transformation of Leipzig is to tell what has happened to the F. W. Woolworth store. The store front still carries a red sicn with the familiar letter ins, "P. W. Woolworth Co." Win dow displays are arrangea Jn the tradition of the worldwide chain. Inside, the counters are neatly laid out, displaying many of the items one always looks tor In "the dime store." But all the merchan dise is from East Germany, and a close look at the sign out front reveals the significant words: "In Verwaltung." meaning "under ad ministration" Communist ad ministration, that is. "Things have certainly changed around here." one clerk told this reporter. "The difference is like day and night." The Communists have chopped the building in half, converting the other part Into a clothing store. Ten years after. World War II. long lines regularly form in front of the state-operated food stores. Meat, fats, sugar and coffee are frequently unavailable. Restau rants still feature "ersatz" coffee, just as they did under Hitler. The nicest thing about the 800-year-old fair, from the viewpoint of the Leipzigers, was the hundreds of shiny autos it brought from the West. Entire families ' spent an after noon or evening walking along the streets, fingering chrome head lights, auto club insignia and paint texture. They tried guessing how to pronounce such names as Buick ond Chevrolet. Most of the local cars were built long before World War II. A large number of them are still fueled from compressed gas tanks, an other hangover from Hitler days. "Old sleds." the Leipzigers con temptuously call them. As a rule, store windows were tastefully decorated this year, and the merchandise frequently ap peared to be of fairly good qual ity. Some shopkeepers went so far as to feature peek-a-boo brassiere and girdle ads. Foam-rubber "fal sies" were liberally displayed. The only U.S. exhibit at the fair was an English-language book dis play presented by Ben Russak, formerly of New Jersey and now living in Stockholm. , Sarasota Baby Dies -While in Bathtub SARASOTA. I Almost to a man. the Bismarck Lions Club believes questionable pictures and reading matter collected by a Sen ate committee would "damage the normal youth's outlook on sex." All but one of 113 club members who marked and . returned secret ballots voted "yes"- on this ques tion after reviewing for 45 minutes material turned over to the club as a "citizens jury" by the Senate's subcommittee on Juvenile delinquency. Some voting slips bore notations like "the equal of first-degree mur der." "disgusting'-Totten," and "as bad as dope rings." All but four of those voting 113 of 116 who attended the review session said the exhibits were 100 per cent indecent for youth, and two of these said they were 99 and 200 per cent indecent. One hundred and four said Uie material was un fit for adults as well. - Sen. William Langer (R-ND). a member of both the Senate sub committee and of the Bismarck Lions, arranged for the club to sit in judgment on the photographs, cartoons, sex . films and reading matter picked up during a series of hearings held in major cities. (CBS-TVI. But I hadn't counted on the U S. Marines. On Tuesday evening Capt. Rich ard S. McCutcbeon of the Marine Corps went for the question and won. Never did a befuddled proph et bow more willingly to a cour ageous warrior. McCutcbeon dis played a coolness, intelligence and modesty throughout his long or deal that makes you want to vote for him for company commander. Capt. Peter Churchill has filed suit for divorce trom tne former Mrs. Odette Sansom. naming a co-respondent ' identified only as Hallowes. Churchill and the French-born Mrs. Sansom met while both were serving as British spies in occupied France and she helped him escape from the gestapo. X must confess that personally I'm a bit tired of The $64,000 Ques tion. But apparently nobody else is. so let's talk about it. McCutcheon has given this pro gram new life at critical age in its history. He has ushered in what you might call its "institutional phase." For when McCutcheon said. "I belong to a very proud organization, and the answer is go.' ' he was speaking lor the Marine Corps. It's to be expected that numer ous Institutions as well as the peo ple who run this program will recognize the promotional value of hiving a "representative" on the who run this show are planning I each other. After McCutcheon, any sucn "representative will to the audience be speaking for his cause as much as for himself. I'll be that right now the Air Force is scurrying around looking for a candidate who can make his way onto and through the program. Probably the Navy and Army too. Word comes that a contestant who will soon be appearing Is a Protestant clergyman who will an swer questions on jazz. It would be logical to expect a Roman Catholic priest and a Jewish rabbi to follow the Protestant clergyman on the program.
