TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13. 1BSS Tumbleveed Crop Grows Over Texas SAN ANGELO, Tex. W-A great many iarmers around here face some pitchfork drill this fall and winter. They'll harvest a crop they can't sell, can't eat. can't feed their cattle, can't afford not to harvest. The plant Is the tumbleweed a Joy to romping children, a ghost to a scary horse and a burden to dryland farmers. Many billions of the weed are ripening in unused fields. High winds last weekend loosened a few million. They whipped across level ground until they hit a fence or other barrier and then they piled up. They buried the fence. Sheltered lawns also were buried several feet deep. Tumbleweeds range from knee" to waist high. Their limbs grow into a light, ball-lite mass of tough branches. They break from the ground easily and children like to race them as the wind rolls them along. A nervous horse shys away from them almost as fast as from a rattlesnake's buzz. Where the weeds pile up. they can burn as if they were gasoline saturated. If Jiey're left along a fence row, winter winds bury them In silt and can completely cover the fence in dirt. Nothing less than a bulldozer moves them success fully. Soil conservationists blame two things for the severe infestation: dry. weather in the early summer which caused fields to be aban doned for the season, and later rain which nurtered the tumble weeds. Elmer Kelton, San Angelo Standard-Times agricultural editor, has his own explanation: "The tumbleweed is nature's way of trying to provide cover for bare ground. "Nature can't abide a bars spot, and where man fails to cultivate or removes the grass, the, old dame steps In and puts tumble weeds or other weeds as her own conservation measure." HERALD AND NEWS. Immigration otlicials said the order alleged that Dr. Tsien was a member of the Communist-party oeiore ne enterea tne United States in 193ti. He was granted a perma nent residence permit in 1947. Robert Robinson, acting ullicer in charge of the Immigration Serv ice here, said yesterday that in leaving the United States. Dr. Tsien would, in effect, be deporting himself. Friends of the Chinese said, how- evei. that ne was bitter agamst the United Slates for first ordermc his deportation and later relusinc him permission to leave the coun try tor live years. The ban on hi leaving was lifted last Aug. 4 and Dr. Tsien resigned from Cnltech snortly thereafter. Dr. Tsien has dented member ship in the Communist party. He was arrested Sent. 7. 1950. bv immigration officers as he was about to sail for China. Eight cases oi scientific Daners were seized on the dock. They had been consigned to ur. ' Subse- Electric Strike In Second Day PITTSBURGH W A strike oi 43,000 members of the CIO Inter national Union of Electrical Work ers against Westinghouse Electric Corp. went into its second day today as negotiators tried to end a deadlock. Although hours of negotiation proved unfruitful yesterday, an other session was called between James B. Carey, president of' the union, and Vice President Robert D. Blaiser of Westinghouse. Neither had any comment when they broke up a long session early today. Meanwhile, peaceful picketing continued at the 37 plants in nine states where the OIO-1EU has bargaining rights. So far there has been no report that operations have been affected in some 30 Westinghouse plants naving contracts with other unions The IEU strike was ordered in support of 2.200 members who struck Aug 8 at the East Pitts burgh plant. This walkout was called because the union said Westinghouse had violated the national contract in starling a time study of certain operations in an efficiency move.
