Big Crowds Expected At Tule Fair Agricultural and home exhibits end livestock showing ere expected to e (tract record crowds to the fourth annual Tulelake-Butte Val - try Fair starting next Sunday In Tulelake. W. c. Whltaker, secretary-man ager of the Tulelake Valley Fair Board, reports that five new build ings and a pavilion will be ready for use this weekend for the three- day affair. In addition, the 35-acre fairgrounds have been completely covered with grass to alleviate the dust problem of last year. Exhibits will be open all three days, but Judging will not get un derway until Mondnv morning at 9 o'clock (PDT. Entries closed Monday, and Whltaker revealed that the number Is triple that of last year. The agricultural and home ex hibits are open to both adults and youths, but the livestock division Is restricted to 4-H and FFA mem bers. ' A prize of 1189 Is being awarded ' this year to the best of the com munity and county booth exhibits. A baseball game between the Tulelake Homesteaders and the Anderson, California, town team will be played Sunday at 2 p.m. Activities begin In earnest on Monday. A flower show is sched uled for 10 a.m , followed by a parade at noon, featuring the Klam ath Union High School band. Then the five new fair buildings will be dedicated. Ouest speakers will include, Congressman Clair Engle and Pauline Davis, state assem blywoman. A band concert and games and contests are due In the afternoon. Main attraction will bo the world championship siphon-setting con test. Among contestants will be Orville Pitts of Macdoel, consid ered the defending world tltllst. He Is said to have set (0 tubes In I minute, 28 seconds. The Klwanla talent show will be held Monday night at 7:30. The livestock auction sale Is slated for Tuesday at 8 a.m. In the new sale pavilion, which seats BOO people. Offered for competitive bidding will be 17 beeves, 16 hogs and 71 sheep, all owned by 4-H and FFA members. The fair officials will move Into helr new office building Wednes day noon. Polio Passes Summer Peak In Europe With Low Record LONDON MV- Polio appears to have hit Its summer peak In Europe without reaching epidemic proportions anywhere. The num ber of cases (or the year to date ranges lrom a low of 10 In Den mark to as high as 1,519 In Eng land and Wales. Only Denmark carried out a large-scale program of Inoculation. The country had 120 polio cases In the same period of 1954. No polio cases have yet developed among 430.000 schoolchildren vac cinated, the Danish Health Board reported. The vaccine was pro duced by the Danish State Serum institute. Severe localized outbreaks oc curred In some areas of Europe. The Bavarian Interior Ministry, for example, reported 438 cases, more than double the state's seasonal average, and 40 deaths since May 1. Berlin reported 48 cases and 5 deaths. Glasgow reported 42 pa tients this week, a polio situation Deputy Henllh Officer W. Home described as "rather more than we can regard as seasonal.' On the other hand, Scandinavia generally had a low number of cases. Swedish and Danish health officials explained big outbreaks In 1052 and 1953 probably Im munized large sections of the popu lation. County Fair Bids Asked Hid for the purchase and re moval of the present Klamath County Fair Sales arena on the fairgrounds will be opened next Monday by the county fair board. The Job Is to take two weeks, and the site la to be filled and prepared for construction of a new sales and show arena. Plans for this Job already have been drawn by Architect Howard Perrin. Construction Is expected to get underway either this fall or next spring. Total cost is to be about flOO.000, but the building will be finished In stages. The first phase will cost about (30.000 It Is to be an all-weather build ing with a seating capacity of 2.500. Half of the seats will be removable to make the structure usable for a rodeo. The plans were made necessary by the Inadequate barn and sales arena facilities at present. They are the result of two years study by a committee composed of mem bers of the fair board and a group from the 4-H Leaders Association. Butte 4-H Club Wins Ribbons MACDOEL Seven blue rib bons, three red ribbons and one white ribbon were won at the re cent Siskiyou County Fair at Yre ka by members of the Butte Val ley 4-H Club who exhibited steers. Winners were Frank, Dennis and Charles Cross, Monte and Diana Roblson, Sylvia and Lynda Hol brook, Judy Fenwick, Linda Kay Crawford and Twyla, Glenda and Dale Johnson. Diana Roblson won reserve champion in the 4-H class with her Hereford steer. She plans on showing htm at the Tulelake Fair. Monte Roblson placed lifth and Diana Roblson sixth in showman ship. The Adams Seed Company of Macdcel bought Frank Cross' steer at the 4-H auction. ' Butte Valley Spurs Plan Morning Ride MACDOEL Members of the Butte Valley Spurs decided to hold n breakfast ride some time in September when they met at the home of Mrs. Lee Sammis Wednes day evening.
