GItfcKNE AP Newsfeaiurcs Writer WASHINGTON tfl American and Canadian scientists are experi menting witii a weiri arsenal o weapons, ranging from electric fences to sonic-wave "death rays," in an attempt to trap and destroy a vicious killer. The target is the sea lamprey, an ell-Uke vampire known as "The Dracuia of the Great Lakes," whose bJoodthirsty depredations have virtually wrecked the multimillion-dollar fishing industry in the chain of lakes along the U.S. Canadian border. Now, under a treaty approved by Congress and the Canadian Parlia ment, marine experts of both coun tries have sworn out a death war rant for the marauder. The. 10-year treaty, ratified by the Senate in June, set up a joint U.S Canadian commission and armed with an initial appropriation of $350,000. Sen. Potter i R Mich i , who quarterbacked the congrespionnl fund-raising drive, told a reporter: "We hope to begin the bit; crack down next spring. I'm going to be on the commission's neck unless A they act fast on this thing." It is- not a new problem. The sea lampreys of the Great Lakes never go to ssa. They live, spawn and die in the lake region. For the first four years of its seven-year life cycle, the lamprey is weak, blind, toothless and harm less, a tiny hermit hiding in an upv.ream mud burrow. Then, in ihe fifth year, an evil metamorphosis takes place. The lamprey grows rapidly, attaining a length of IS to 24 inches. It develops ugly staring eyes, a round suction-disk mouth with concentric rows of razor-sharp teeth, and a rasping lile-Hke tongue. DOWNSTREAM Armed with this lethal equip ment, the lamprey swims down stream from spawning ground to lake and there begins its final 13 month career as a ferocious vam nire. attacking lake trout, white- fish, pickerel, sturgeon and other valuable game fish. For fomc reason, the victims never take alarm at the approach of the killer. Unsuspected, the lamprey suddenly strikes. Then it's tco late to escape. The most vio lent thrashing fails to throw off Ihe deadly parasite, which rasps p hole into the side of the victim and sucks its blood and body juices until ihe fish is dead or the lamprey satiated. The stone may last a few days to several weeks. Scientists say the lamprey has no natural enemies or diseases to keep it in check. But fortunately the lamprey has one weakness. To ward the end of its life, it has to (?o upstream to spawn or die without spawning a new genera tion. Thus 3f the rsady-to-spawn lamp reys ran be prevented from enter ing the hundreds of tribtu ary streams flowing into the Great Lakes, scientists say the scaven gers can at least be brought under control, if not exterminated. American and Canadian authori ties have already erected more than 70 electrical barriers in streams on the U.S. side of the Great Lakes and about 3f! on the Canadian side. The electric fences are a rela tively cheap and simple device, using regular 110-volt alternating cuirent for the main "death trap" barrier. Slightly downstream, a weak 55-voit field serves as a non-lethal warning to valuable game lish such as trout and pick erai, which turn back when the first mild shock tingles their nose. Less sensitive to electricity than I fish, the lampreys swim on through ' the warning zone until they reach the hich-voltage field which kills ; them. Three rows of aluminum elect- , rodes, spaced 3!j fees between; rows and 4 feet between electrodes, : do the trick, the electrodes are anchored to the stream bed held by 4-foot steel pins driven into the bottom. Fish and Wildlife experts say that in one test not a single lamp rey escaped after entering the electric "death" zone. But even after every spawning stream is blocked by electric bar riers and there are at least 23Q streams on the U.S. side alone it will still take five or six years to "control" the lamprey menace. This is because there are five generations of lampreys, - in various stag?s of development, now growing in the streams. Each year a new generation matures and heads for the lakes, but by some quirk of nature the youns lake bound lampreys are immune to electricity. As a result, the barrierswill kill each succeeding generation only after they have completed their 18-month "Dracuia" cycle in the lakes and try to return upstream to spawn.
