Siskiyou Borrows $200,000 YREKA Siskiyou County will borrow 1200,000 to. tide it over for the first half of the fiscal year until money become available through tax collections In Decern ber. County Auditor Ernest T. John' on told the Board of Supervisors at Its Tuesday meeting that the county's general reserve fund does not contain enough money to pay county expenses during the period, between now and December 31. The general reserve fund is set up as a depository for money for this purpose. The supervisors authorized John son and Supervisor Clint Jackson (Edgewoodi to meet with bankers )n the county to negotiate for the loan and to obtain lnformnl quota - tlons of the Interest rale to be charged. Johnson said that there are two reasons why the general reserve fund Is Inadequate. He said that last year the supervisors trans ferred $160,000 from the fund to the general fund, and that an $83,- 000 deficit appeared In the county welfare budget due to a bookkeep ing error. In explaining why the 1150,000 transfer had been made, jonnson said that the supervisors at that time had felt that the reserve fund would be adequate without the money. He said that on July 1, 1954, the fund had 1512.000. The transfer was made In July, and resulted m the lowering of the general tax rate. The welfare deficit resulted be cause the previous auditor had In cluded state and federal emergency aid money designated for July, 1954 Into the 1054-1955 surplus, Johnson said. This money was received in June of 1954. Johnson said there Is now MB. O00 In the reserve fund, to which the $200,000 would be added. He said the county spends about $700,000 a month, but much of this Is offset by current revenues. iuch as fees and state and federal payments. He said that this Is the first time to his knowledge that the county has had to horrow money for the general reserve fund. He said, however, that some counties do not have a general reserve fund, and borrow annually In order to keep operating. Tax money would be available on December 31, and bills pay able at that time, as well as the loan, would be paid out of the tax collections. The contract will specify that all des ignated timber shall be cut and re- Fire Controlled At Clauson Gulch YREKA A forest fire in Clauson Oulch, 10 miles north of Happy Camp, burned over 40 acres betore it was brought under con trol about 7 p.m. Thursday. It had started at noon on the south fork of Indian Creek, the Klamath National Forest reported. The fire started from an exhaust spark from a chain saw being operated in the area, according to Lee Morford, fire dispatcher for the Klamath National Forest. Morford stated that about 200 men were on the fire all of Thurs day afternoon and praised the co operation the forest service re ceived from loggers and mlllwork- ers In the Happy Camp area who, In many cases. Joined the tire fighters without being asked. There were fire crews from Fort Jones, Selad, Happy Camp, Tee Bar, West Branch and crew lead ers from other districts in the vicinity. This morning there were still about 100 men doing mop-up work at the scene of the fire. No esti mate of the damage was available today. LAKE Mrs. Roy Carlon, Mrs. James Foster and Hu bert wagers will attend teachers institute at Lakeview starting Mon day for two days and at Klamath Falls August 31 and September 1. ore-day session will follow at Paisley on September 2. Mrs. Carlon will teach home economics; Mrs. Foster, third and fourth grades, and Wagers the seventh and eighth grades In the Paisley public school.
