Grain Storage Problems Told Although 1955 wheat and barley production In Oregon is expected to be one-fifth less than last year, suitable on-Iarm storage will con tinue to be a problem, says Ray Teal, Oregon State College seed and grain marketing specialist. Farm storage of the two grains July 1 was about the same as a year earlier. Farm-stored barley supplies were three times greater than the previous year which closed the gap left by smaller wheat supplies In farm storage. - Teal reminds farmers that safe, acceptable farm storage is needed to meet commodity credit corpora tion requirements to qualify grain for government loans.' He says grain can be stored safely on the farm for more than a year, pro viding a few precautions are taken. ' Particular attention -must be paid to moisture content of grain. Also, farmers must use structurally strong and weather-tight buildings to qualify for the government pro gram. Loans to help finance stor age structures are available through local ASC committees. Teal cautions. that buyers may refuse to pay food-grain prices for grain that has been contaminated by rats, mice, birds or Insects. The special ist's final reminder is that farmers should protect grain against all hazards whether holding it tor on- the-farm use or for government loan. D. tl'IGG I'nitrd Press Staff Covrcspordfnl NEW yoRK tupi A nation wide trend has been spotted that shuuld not go unheralded. If you know a herald who isn't working at tbe moment, give him this: The nation is trending more to ward fried eggs. What this augurs for the na tion's stomachs must be a subject of ominous concern for people who prefer their eegs coddled, boiled, baked, poached, or shirred. Or people like Jimmy Durante, who says "I eats 'em rawr." And for the residents of Prov idence, R. I., who. despite the trend, prefer their egss boiled. The trend and the steadfast adhering of Providence to boiling was spotted by the National Geographic Society, a group of learned persons (eRgheadsi who seem to stretch geograuhy a long wav all over the map. in fact. The society, in its news bulletin Research Building Opening Ready The new chemical engineering building at Oregon State college will be equipped and ready for opening of scjiool next month, col lege officials report. Students will find the building one of the nation's top centers for teaching and research. The $665,000 structure was in spected and accepted by the state board of higher education in July, Equipment is now being installed in preparation for classes which begin September 26. The new lab oratories and other facilities will also permit expansion of research programs. Enrollment in chemical engineer ing has increased sharply in recent years but the need for trained workers is still running far ahead of the supply and will for years to come, accord Inn to J. 8. Walton, department head. All of the 1955 graduates were placed before com' mencement. DAMAGE SANTA FE, N. M. It offeis the following additional egg habits: 1. Half the shoppers in Mans field, O.,' Columbus, o., and Wich ita, Kan., still buy their ecus by the bag rather than the carton. 2. Chicago housewives go for light-yolk egg; those in su round ing towns go for orange yolks. , 3. Bostoniens will pay several cents a dozen more ior brown- shell eggs; New Yorkers pay more ior wmio sneits., 4. Americans ate an average ot 414 eggs per person last year more then ever before, and al most half again as many as 40 years ago. 5. Hot out of the nest, an esc has a temperature of 105 degrees. But If you don't put the chill on it "It deteriorates fast." The preference for white or brown' eggs, the society explain;.. comes from the days when it was difficult to ship them without dam aging quality. So, eggs laid near est home (brown in Boston, white In New. York) were deemed the besr quality. "Today,' the bulletin says. "It matters little where hens lay their bids for immortality. . . Uieir eggs will likely travel far to the frying pan." Well, It's good to know at long last why hens make such a rack et. One whole year on the farm there was a hen Julia by name who bounced me awake every morning: by bidding shrilly for Im mortality. And as for the trend toward fried eggs, the society, merely ob serves It and offers no explana tion. Maybe it's Just the pendulum swinging. Take my father, for Instance. He liked soft-boiled eggs. For 35 years, beginning in 1900, Daddy ate a soft-boiled egg every morn- CLOSING OUT SALE continutt KLAMATH FURNITURE CO. 211 Main SAVE 70 Req, $269.95 Value SPECIAL On This 9 Big Cu. Ft.
