The annual Oregon Women's Softball Tournament opens here to night at Conger Field with the first three of 20 scheduled games, and the defending champions, the Klamath Basin-ettes have their backs against the wall set for a slrong defense of their 1954 state crown. Six of the 11 entries take to the Conger Field diamonds in the lirst three games of the four day tournament, and all pre-tourney forecasts point for one of the fin est such playoffs held to date. The 1953 state champions. Lake Oswego, opens this year's tourna ment when they meet Forest Grove in the tournament opener Turn to Classified for HOMES NEAR SCHOOLS! It's "Homei-Neer-School." You can be settled by th time School Bells start ringing! Playoffs at 6:45. Two other games will follow at. 8:30 as Merrill meets Eugene and Salem tests the strong Rogue River JTs. Mayor Paul Landry will be on hand and the official welcome of the city will be made to all the state tournament entries. His Hon or will also open the first game of the tournament by tossing the first pitch. Besides the Mayor of Klamath Falls, several other city officials are expected to be on hand as will some of the state softball leaders. ATTRACTION This is the first year that the women's softball playoffs have been held outside of Portland, which could be a pioneer move for other upstate cities seeking Open liirge sports attractions for their citizens. Tomorrow, Friday, the tourna ment will move into its biggest day of action as 11 games have been scheduled. Starting with three games at 1 o'clock and closing with a pair of diamond battles starting at 8:30. The Conger Field games will be played nt 1-2:45-5-7-8:30. Two games at Recreation Field will be played in the after noon at 1 o'clock and 2:45. Saturday four games are on tap with two of them slated for Gem Stadium, the first action of this nature since the Klamath Falls Gems and the Far West League left the local sports scene several years ago. In the afternoon Conger will be the site of two games start ing at 2 o'clock and that night at 7 o'clock and 8:30 Oem Sta dium will serve as the tournament location. Sunday, which will be the "big day" lor two of the 11 teams entered, a 1955 champion will be crowned. One afternoon game is scheduled for 2 o'clock and Sun day evening the championship tilt starts at 7 o'clock. Albany takes on a challenge from the Salem-Roguc River winner and Klamath makes It's tournament debut as It laces the Orenco Val ley champs, the Gales Creek Dia mond Darlings. FAVORITE The pre-lournamcut favorite's spot has been given to the power ful Lake Oswego Mermaids, who claim several all-staters and one former All-American soltballcr. The Mermaids are very strong in the pitching department with all staters Jackie Rice, and Catherine Cannard plus the twirling tactics of All - American outfielder-pitcher Tehlma Parrlsh Carlson, cx-Lind Florist starlet. The Basin-ettcs, even though they are on their homo ground, will Seals Pound Seattle Underhand Pitcher By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Seattle manager Fred Hutchin son tried Bob Fcslcr, softball pitching ace, against eighth-place San Francisco in both ends of a Pacific Coast League doublchcad er Wednesday night and the guinea pig Seals won both games, 5-3 and 13-5. Fesler. who has scored some 55 softball shutouts with his whirling windmill delivery, quickly learned that things were different in regu lation ball. The Seals rolled five runs across in the opening game's first inning on two hits, five walks, two wild pitches and a balk. John Old ham, throwing In orthodox style, shut out the Seals the rest of the way. Hutchinson again tried the Fes ler experiment In the final two innings of the second game, when Seattle was trailing 9-5. Fesler again had control trouble, walk ing four, throwing two wild pitches and hitting one batter. The first game for the defend ing champs will be a 2:45 Friday afternoon at Conger against Oales Creek. If they win their first out ing the Klamath will meet the winner of the Albany vs. Salem Rogue River game at 8:30 Friday evening at Conger Field. Tickets for the tournament are $2 for the season pass, good for all games played, 50 cents for adults for single game tickets and 26 cents for single game ducats for students. Wayne Belnrdi drove one of Fes- ler's pitches for a two-run homer in the second game. In three In nings in both games Fesler yield ed nine runs. While the first-place Rainiers lost two games In pitching experimen tation, the Hollywood Stars scored a business-like 10-3 victory over Portland and closed to two games back of Seattle. Lee Wails hit a pair of two-run homers and Bob Garber scattered nine Beaver hits. The win was Hollywood's third against one loss in the series. At Oakland, Cal McLlsh pitched a seven-Inning one-hitter as San Diego won the first game, 3-0. Oakland's Fred Besana countered with a two-hit shutout of the Pad res in the second game, which the Acorns won, 8-0.
