SUNDAY, AUGUST 7, ia55 HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON PAGE THIRTEEN Referee designs, Drivers Feud In Gold Cup Classic Shriners To Open Practice SEATTLE ifl Ten ol America's fastest speedboats are set for Sun day's Cold Cup racing classic on Lake Washlnaton. As driver friction which was overshadowing pUlon friction sub sided during a series of meetings Saturday, it looked by the hour more like ths premier speedboat infc event It always has been and less like a lakeshore wrangle. One of the final points of conten tion was eliminated Saturday alt- ernoon when the drivers' commit tee reversed a morning decision and screed to let Col. Russ Schleeh in old hand at jet airplanes, drive the Rebel Suh of Norfolk, Va Fe had been judged previously as lacking In qualifications tor tne trickv and daneerous loo 01 pilot ing a high speed hydroplane in the crowded field on the Si-miie course. The reversal of the ruling on Schleeh ended the threat ol me withdrawal of the Rebel and Misc. Thriftway, a new Seattle entry from the race. ToH .tones, designer of both boats had threatened to keen the Rebel "on the beach'' if Schleeh could not drive it. The TMrftway's own er had said he might do tne same. The drivers' committee, the Gold Cup Committee of the American Power Boat Assn., voted unani mously late Saturday afternoon tt ban a straightaway "flying start" for ths race. A dispute over the type of racing slart had broujhtathe resignation of Mel Crook, Montcliir. N. J., the referee, and the threat of a race boycott by Detroit drivers. It was a rulinir against flying starts by Referee Crook that led to controversy and his resignation Friday. His successor, Stanley Donogh of Seattle, polled drivers on the issue Saturday morning, and all but the driver of one Seattle entry opposed the "flvm? start." They have criti cised file straightaway run to the starting line as too dangerous. Meanwhile. Lou Fr.geol of Kent, Ohio, famed racing driver who was injured severely Friday when the Slo-mo-shun V, the defending champion, was wrecked, was re ported to have a punctured lung. broken, ribs and muscle injuries. A doctor said he had been lucky 'to pull through" and that he faces a week to 10 days in the hospital. The Slo-mo V is definitely out ol the race. Ten other boats, includ ing the sister Slo-mo IV of Seattle, have qualified for Sunday's spec tacular 80-mile race, Eoats which have qualified and their drivers are: t Slo-mo-shun IV, Seattle, Joe Tag- garl; Miss Thriftway, Seattle, Bill Muncey: Rebel Suh, Norfolk, Va., Russ Schleeh; Seootar too, Lake Tahoe, Calif.. Jack Regis; Breath less, Piedmont, Calif., Jay Mur phy: dale IV. Detroit, Bill Can- trell: Gale V, Detroit, Lee Schoen- ith; Miss V. S., Detroit, Jack Ban. low: Miss Cadillac, Detroit, Bud Saile; and Tempo VII, New York City, Danny Foster. Two boats yet to pufcltfy for the Oold Cup are Such Crust 111, De troit, and Zephyr Fury, Los Angeles. Picture Confused As Davis Cuppers Falter By WILL GRIMSLEV GLEN COVE, N.Y. UP The over-ail Davis Cup picture reached such a state of confusion today that the big question appeared to be not who will win the tennis tro phy this year, but who will lose it. And lurking darkly in tne back ground ready to pounce on any misfortune which might bclall eim- er of the two major tennis powers, Australia or America, was a band of audacious Italians, In a position to pull the upset of the decade. These were the developments: 1. Australia's Ken Rosewall and SanSayres To Retire Slo-MoJoats Holy Cross Hoop Coach Resigns Post WORCESTER. Mass Wl Lester H. (Buster) Shearv, resigned Sat urday as basketball coach at 5fIy Cross College in a salary dispute. Sheary has coached the Cru saders since the spring of 1S48 and in seven seasons his teams won 155 games while losing only 36. His teams were in tournaments In six of the seven seasons and in 1954 Holy Cross won the Sugar Bowl and National Invitational Tournament championships. Both Holy Cross officials and Sheary admitted that salary terms prompted the resignation. In its formal announcement, the college said it accepted the resig nation "regretfully." In a hasty interview Sheary said he regretted leaving Holy Cross "because of the type of boys I had . . and friendships I formed. He added, "My . philosphy has been to make gentlemen as well as basketball players and there is also the philosophy ol economy for a familv man to consider. I have to look for the right re muneration. "I'm just going to sit back and await offers," he said. It is known that at least one Big Seven school ".unidentified t and La Salle College, Phila delphia, made overtures to Sheary in the last couple of years. For Lease Immediate occupancy. SEATTLE Wl Stan Sayres, owner of the Slo-mo-shuns IV and and V, announced his retirement from the unlimited racing field Saturday, effective after Sunday's Gold Cup races. In a three-page statement, the Seattle business man said "un pleasant events" of the past week prompted his decision. He referred to the controversy over "Hying starts' wnicn nis vinnina Slo-nio's have used the oast several years and which have been banned Sunday as a saieiy measure because of the large field of lo entered. "The retirement nwy or may not be permanent," Sayres said. "I will not make a decision right now that will be binding lorever. Prior to the vunpleasant events ol the past week I had no intention whatsoever of retiring," Should his Slo-mo IV, a three- times winner, win again Sunday, Sayres said, he will make it avail able bv either sale, charter or loan lo the Seattle Yacht Club and Creator Seattle Inc. for the 1956 defense of the troDhy. Slo-mo V, defending champion, was eliminated irom tins year s event Friday in a spectacular high speed flip-ilop which seriously in jured Lou rageoi, uie unvei. More than six years of effort pressure, expense and neglect of my business interests have taken a heavv toll." Sayres said. "It has aggravated some health problems, I am 53 years old. "As to the controversy about the start under tne Bridge, I simpiy sav that Mel Crook Monlclair, N, J referee who resigned this week, he said, under "pressure Irom the defending team") and all competi tors have every right to their opin ion, but Lou iFageol) and I have a right to our s. "Had the ruling been made 30 davs ago or even the day that Mr. Cronk arrived in Seattle, we would Have accepted it regretfully but in good snints. "Our definite distaste for the decision arose because oi the tim ing of the edict and the well-pub- 1 ctzed and recorded statements oi other persons, long before the de cision was olliciauy given to me. Savres two boats, designed by Ted Jones, Seattle, virtually revo lutionized the hydroplane nera. Since 1950 they have set two world records, won live Oold Cup races. a President's Cup and an Inter national Harmsworth Trophy. Nearly all unlimited boats arc now , copies of the Slo-mo s. Red Hartwig looked anything but impressive in winning opening sin gles matches from the Japanese at the Nassau Country Club here. Rosewall, playing the poorest ten nis seen of him in this country turned back Atsushl Miyagl 6-4. 6-4, 6-1. Hartwig was forced the limit to beat Kosei Kama 8-6, 6-8, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, 2, Bill Talbert, U.S. Davis Cup captain announced that Wimbledon champion Tony Trabert, suffering a shoulder ailment, had been ad vised by doctors to skip the Ca sino Tournament next week In Newport, R.I. 3. Two other of America's top Davis Cup hopes. Vie Seixas and Eddie Moylan, were beaten at South Orange, N.J., Seixas trimmed badly by , little known Ssm Gimmalva of Houston and Moylan by Dane Kurt Nielsen. Things don't look good for any body except, possibly the Italians who, with Capt. Vanme Canepele, attended the opening interzone matches between Australia and Japan. The Australians can clinch the match today in doubles, sending the team of Hartwig and Lew Head against Miyagl and Kamo, If they prevail as expected then regardless of how the final singles matches Sunday tum out. the Aussies will go against the Italians in the interzone finals Germantown, Pa., next weekend The winners challenge America for the trophy at Forest Hills, N.Y, August 26-28. The Italians, whose tennis up surge Is the talk of Europe, cer tainly could not have been overt; impressed by the Australians yes terday. 213 PORTLAND Two seeka of In- ensive practice will open here this week for the Metropolitan and tate all star teams, which collide In the eighth annual Shrineri' all. star football game the night of August 20 in Multnomah stadium. Walker, who has exhibited un usual patience since he took over from the fired Eddie stanKy, was thoroughly angered after the sev enth-place Cardinals lost to pnit delphia 7-4 Friday night for the! 11 Ih defeat In 14 games. He all but exploded when some of the Cardinals yelled "Din; play" al the way Jim Orecngrass of the Phils bulled his way into home plate, accidentally spikini catcher Bill Sarni and permitting the Phils to go ahead. Then, after the game and behind closed doors, the scowling Walker gave the Cardinals a going-over. "It's about time that tho Card inals' tradition means something io some of these fellas," Walker said later. "I'm fed up with those hlankety-blank bases on balls and the tense pitching that gets pitch ers behind hitters to the point they groove a fat one. "I'm fed up with our right-handed hitters not hitting left-handers. "But mainly, I'm fed up be cause some of these fellas seem satisfied to sit back. You've got lo step out and take charge in this game or go back to the bushes. "It's no pink tea up here." Of Greengrass' rugged slide into home. Walker said "That's the way to play ball the way guys like (Enos) Slaughter and others won reputations as well as ball games and championships."
