FLEA BEETLES BIT THE DUST after this spray rig, operated on the Bill Burgess ranch one mile south of Newell, treated a 10-acre field of horseradish this week. Horseradish withstood the late spring frosts with flying colors and is attacked by few insect pests or diseases. It is being raised here for the first time this year on a commercial scale. Growers have planted slightly more than 100 acres. Home Extension The annual picnic ot the AHa mom. Extension Unit was held at Moore Park on Wednesday, July 27, with Mrs. Frank Peyton, chair man of the unit as hostess. Six teen members and their guests were present, including Mrs. H. V. Borton, chairman of the county council. Following the potluck luncheon Mrs. Peyton announced the follow ing chairmen to serve during the 1955-56 season: Mrs. Glenn Brum ble, hospitality; Mrs. Pete Colley. luncheon: Mrs. John Heyden, 4-H Club; Mis. Fred K a r 1 s o n, recreation: Mrs. Job Schuh. pub licity; Mrs. Joe Overton, Azalea House and scholarship. Other com mittee chairmen will be secured at a later date. The other officers oi the unit in addition to Mrs. Fey ton are Mrs. W. C. Killian, vice chairman; Mrs. C, D. Bronson, secretary, and Mrs. O. B. Thur man, treasurer. The first regular project meeting of the Altamont Unit will be held the first Tuesday in October. The subject of the demonstration will be announced later. Officers' train ing meeting for all officers and committee chairmen will be held at Joan's Kitchen on September 13. Mrs. Borton announced that a pic nic will be held at Collier Park on Thursday, August- 4 for all ex tension members in the county and their families. The meeting closed with a happy note when Mrs. Peyton conducted an amusing guessing game at which time the women were all surprised to find that their waist lines were much more trim than they had thought. Legion Honors Youth Delegates DUNSMUIR Girl's State and Boy's State delegates were honored at the annual picnic of Epps Post and Unit, American Legion, at the Dunsmuir City Park Monday eve ning. Verna Faye White and her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon White, were introduced by Christine Coon, Girl's State chairman. The delegates expressed their appreciation for being sent to the meetings at Sacramento in June and told some of their experiences. Weed Legion Holds Meeting I Refreshments were served to the organization's members and visitors. WEEP Separate meetings of the American Legion Post 11 and Auxiliary Unit mere held in the White Pine Hall Thursday night, July 2. the groups merging later for the program ot the evening. Newly elected officers, Mrs. Eu phene Reed, president; Mrs. Gene vieve McCorkle, secretary;, and Mrs. Orby Shaffer, chaplain; were installed at the unit meeting. Guest speakers at the Post meet ing were Olney Rucrd. past dis trict commander, Lee Sonnenberg and Clyde Todd of Tulelake. . For the program group songs were sung by the two organizations preceding the Introduction of guests, CAP Lt. Bette Miller, Cadet Lt. Laryl Erickson, Cadet Owen Miller and Cadet Corp. Jane Dan-' lels of the Medford squadron. They ' explained the origin and work ol the CAP, an auxiliary of the Air Force. Films taken at Lackland Air Base, Texas, were shown by Lt. Miller for the remainder ot '.he program.
