I am Interested In knowing, however. This statement will, of course, bring down a storm of protest from sportsmens' group.;, nature lovers, do-gooders and that pecu- liar class of people who consider hunting nothing but a particular ly degenerate lorm of murder any way. Let rr.e say rr;ht now that 1 am In favor of abolishing all reserves. I don't stand for bi-,'t?er bag limits or longer shooting hours or longer seasons or any of the rest of it. But I do, and in a very strong ;n?nncr. believe that the game in liis country belongs to us as clt liiet it Is a heritage handed tiovm by our forefathers. Tie game would have no place to go. there would be no breeding grounds, no resting grounds for those ol a migratory nr.ture. But the entire United States Li covered with a maz?.of reserves '.hat arj, in etltct, doing nothing but saving our migratory birds for Ihe game hosts and commercial hunters of Mexico. Ad;quate rest- 'ng grounds must be furnished the; birds and the deer. We must see to it that they have adequate facil ities lor breeding and for renrinff their young. But beyond that we can. conceivably, open up portions of these vast reserves to the shoot ing public during the proper sea son. I hope the commission every success In their efforts. I think they are doing a sincere job of trying to nelp tne sportsmen. It s largely a case of one small group trying to please a force ol mil lions of hunters. If the sportsmen of America would band together as a party, stick together end direct their Tims In an intelligent and far- sighted manner they would be the most powerful body in America today. They could change the en tire facs of the political picture. elect presidents and bring about game legislation that would tend to keep the majority of them hap py. Im afraid this situation will never arise, however, because If you get over half a dozen sports men, outdoorsmtm, hunters or whatever you choose to call them together the thing will end up In an argument as sure as shooting. No pun Intended. We'll know more about It next year when the legislative session winds up. In the meantime I'll go on plugging for those things that I think we should have in the game laws: A 30-day either sex deer season, an early opening of the duck season, even If It means shorter shooting season and a lowered bag limit. We sometimes read of the anti cipation of seeing the Southern Cross by those taking their first voyages Into the southern seas. But the traveler cannit expect to see this figure in the early evening skies at all times of the year un less he goes as far south as Uru guay. There the Southern Cross - like our Big Dipper here is al ways above the horizen. But any where 1:1 southern latitudes, and even farther north, it is highest and due south at 9 p.m. during the middle of May.
