Mahon when between Marilyi By RELMAN MORIS CLEVELAND ti A picture of a serene and happy marriage was emerging today from the testi. mony ot Dr. Samuel Sheppard's relatives, lighting to free him cl the charge that he murdered his wife, Marilyn. They have been taking the wit ness stand, one after another. In his defense. 1 Their testimony hits at the heart of the state's case against the handsome, dark-haired osteopath the' charge that his motive for murder arose from his relations with other women. Sheppard's story is that someone Art Official Reveals Stunt LONDON Wi Sir Gerald Kelly, president of Britain's Royal Aca demy of Art, disclosed last night thai he once stole one of the late King George VI's art masterpieces and replaced it with a fake. It was only a stunt to prove it could be done, Kelly told the audi ence at an art exhibition. He later returned the work, a painting by the 16th-century German artist Hans Holbein. Kelly said the Incident occurred in 1950 when the King lent his Windsor Castle collection of Hol beins for a London exhibition. "I got, into' a, panic In case one was stolen," Kelly said. To find out whether such a theft would bs easy, he said, he had "a large woman" smuggle In a repro duction of one of the paintings un der her dress, had two children divert attention wim an outcry in an adjoining room and deftly switched the paintings. "The whole operation took 34 seconds," he said. "After that the Holbeins were locked in the cellar every night. And we never did tell anybody of our little experiment." broke into his home and battered his wife to death as she lay in bed in an upstairs room while he took a nap on a couch downstairs. He says the killer struck him down when he ran to help her, severely injuring him in the strug gle. Step by step, Sheppard's law yers have been building a defense, based in large part on a descrip tion ot his married life as told by members of the family. They pic ture him as a devoted husband and Marilyn as a happy wife, mother of one child and expecting another, "They were happy Just being to gether." With these words, Mrs. Stephen Sheppard, his sister-in-law summarized her view of Uie mar riage. Mrs. Sheppard Is married to the older brother of the accused man. Of Dr. Sam she said "He was like all normal husbands. He helped Marilyn a great deal. He was very generous in helping her. He was very respectful to her. They did a great many things to gether and with Chip (the son. now seven). They did lots of sports together. They were very happy Just being together." Under cross examination Mrs. Sheppard stuck firmly to her state ment that she knew of no Tins in the marriage. JShe returned a sc ries of emphatic "no's" to Prose- Ph.
