The basket, apparently made by Toby Riddle, the Wtnema of Mo doo Indian War, was Included In the shipment of some 40 other bas kets recently received by Mrs. Mc Leod. It was tagged with Mrs. Rid dle's name and Is probably between 6) and 80 venrs old. It is excel lently preserved and was made from tules and cattails. Thousands of baskets and other Indian artifacts have been taken from Oregon to be sold elsewhere and Mrs. McLeod considers It a coincidence that one made by Wl r.ema found its way back to the counlry where she was raised. Those are among the abuses singled out by Chairman Deems Taylor and fellow judgs of the Sylvania Tele vision Awards Committee in their annual report last night. The committee gave TV credit for "a defUiite upward swing in the quality of programs" in the past year but added that "unfor tunately, television retains some less commendable features." "There still is too much time and energy devoted to trite, banal and downright silly concoctions, it continued. "Many shows, in aim ing at the widest possible audience, altogether miss the target of true entertainment values." Among the specifics cited against TV was the "pitchman technique" in which "announcers manage to turn a purported program into one long, repetitious commercial."
