Costly Year-Long Strike
PITTSBURGH Wl APL Team-
sters Local 249 has ended a costly
year-long strike against five major
department stores paving the way
for settlement by 11 other APT,
unions Involved in the walkout.
A new contract, signed yester.

unions will settle ouicklv. The
teamsters' rank and file voted 422-
299 to authorize signing of the
wree-year pact.
Sources close to both sides in
the controversy estimated the
teamsters lost three million dollars
in wages. During the walkout the
stores have withheld earnings re

Belles and Beauxs club was held
at our leader's home, John Kerns,

er. Our leader appointed a pro
gram, committee which consisted

meet November 22 to plan the
program for the following year.
They are to meet at our leader's
home.
We decided to have a meeting
once a month. The dues are 50
cents a year. Wo sang songs and
had refreshments. Then the meet
ing was adjourned.

vessel ,s 42 crewmen were injured.
The ship, identified as the 9,829

at a dock here when the blast oc
curred. A fire set off by the ex
plosion was confined to the engine-

post, the stores agreed to use this
form of delivery only When all
drivers are working.

for the stores, says he has not
arranged for- meetings with the
other unions, but he added he ex
pected to hear from them soon.
There was no comment from the
unions. i
Thomas L. Fagan. president of
the teamsters local, said he is not
entirely satisfied with the terms
of the new contract, declaring:
"Some of the provisions mav
work to the detriment of our mern-
oersnip, out I am hopeful that the
good faiih developed in the settle
ment of this contract may over
come these problems."
STRIKE UNAPPROVED
The teamsters' strike was not an.
proved by the union's International
president, Dave Beck. Beck re
fused to intervene, saving both
sides rejected his offer to act as
arbitrator.

he thinks results of the congres
sional elections which gave Demo
crats control of the new Congress
were Influenced greatly by the
threat of reduced price supports
under the Elsenhower program.
"I don't think the full weight of
the new program, was entirely felt
in this month's elections," Mon
roney said. "The threat of support
drops was enough to help elect
Democratic senators In Michigan,
Illinois, Minnesota, Wyoming and
Montana and to reelect a Repub
lican who was for 90 per cent
parity In South Dakota.
"After the flexible parity pro
gram goes into effect Jan. 1, the
support reductions are going to
be felt In a widespread area."
The Oklahoma senator noted that
a new formula for parity a price
standard said by law to give
farmers a fair return in terms of
things they buy will go into ef
fect, aa well as the new authority
for the secretary of agriculture to
lower or raise percentage pay
ments. The new parity formula.
scheduled to start taking effect in
1950, would lower the support level
somewhat further.

has contended that the election
results showed no repudiation of
the President's flexible parity pro
gram, citing among other instan
