TUESDAY NOVEMBER 1, 1954 HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS. ORIOON lAO WW WANT ADS Get u In -The-Ways" Out of The Way! Orioles Show Net Profit By GAVLE TALBOT NEW YORK HI The most time ly reading of the week in spor's circles comes in the form of a pamphlet mailed to each of the stockholders of the Baltimore Base ball Club, Inc., disclosing that the Orioles in their first season of free dom from St. Louis have earned a tidy net profit of $94.153.29 aftjr estimated taxes. Now, there is a nice, fat figuie which Uie presidents of seven other American League clubs should be able to read and assimilate with out any great mental strain as they mull over their final decision mi the landing place of the Philadel phia Athletics. It's as simple as mat. A club which, had lost $707,000 operating as the St. Louis Browns the pre vious year was poured into new uniforms and moved into a new city and came near making a mil lion dollars after paying all ex penses. On the face of it, there appears to be no sound reason why the 'A's could not be expected to do something comparable in Kan sas City, even though the popula tion of the Midwestern city is far short of Baltimore's. Population, as a matter of fact, seems to mean less and less these days as enthusiasm lor baseball shifts steadily away from the big Eastern centers of Its origin. Mil waukee has for the second straight season demonstrated that a head count into the millions is not neces sary if you give the fans a club they can root for. Baltimore didn't have even that. The Orioles were only a little less deplorable than the Athletics, and yet they pulled a total of 1,060,917 paying customers at the gate, or an average of about 15,800 per home contest. Sports Writer Asked To Prove Charges CHICAGO Wl The Illinois Ath letic Commission has asked sports writer .Jack Mabley of Tne Chi cago Daily News to prove his charges that boxing Is controlled by "syndicate criminals." Livingston Osborne, commission chairman, said he would like. Mab ley to appear at a special meeting which he plans to call next week. Mabley began a series of arti cles on boxing Monday and stated in his first story that "the czar of boxing is Frank Carbo, thug who found managing fighters was more profitable and less hazard ous than being triggerman for Murder Inc." ' "Carbo controls boxing from New Yorl. But Chicago has a vi tal concern in the racket," Mab ley said. , ' The charges brought a demand from Truman Gibson, secretary of the International Boxing Club, that Mabley prove his charges before the Illinois Athletic Com mission. Gibson, in a letter to the com mission, said" Mabley's conclusion that boxing is a racket1 and that "the czar of boxing is Frank Car bo" are serious allegations. Osborne said he will have rep resentatives from the state's at torney's office, the Attorney Gen eral's office and from the FBI for the meeting. Caps Trim Chinese '5' RIO DE JANEIRO Wl The United States team, made up of the Peoiial (111.) Caterpillars, seems to be headed for a show down Friday against Brazil for the world basketball championship. Both teams are sailing along with 5-0 records in the round-robin competition after easy victories Monday night. The giant American team had an easy time trimming National ist China 72-28 while Brazil was besting France, 49-36. The Philip pines defeated Canada 83-76 in the only other game played. Espinosa Whips Ring Foe OnTKO OSAKA. Japan t.fi Battling Bonnie Fspinosa of the Philippines locked like a beaten (ighter Tues day night until he salvaged his Orient lightweiaht title with a sev enth round technical knockout ovsr Katsumi Kosaka of Japan. The Japanese challenger staged a completely unexpected come back from his bad loss to Espt nosa last summer, but Kosaka lort out when they bumped heads in the 7th of 12 scheduled rounds. U.S. Army Major Jack Sullivan, the referee, stopped the fight on doctors' advice, because Kosaka's eye was badly cut. USED Tractor Buy! Bums May Revamp Infield BROOKLYN Wl Tile Brook lyn Dodgers' veteran infield may be revamped for 1955 because of a 22-year-old Cuban rookie short stop named Humberto (C h 1 c o) Fernandez. Fernandez currently Is the No. 1 glamour boy ot the Dodgers, even more highly prized than Karl Spooner, the young righthander who broke into the majors last September with a pair of spec tacular shutouts. Dodger Vice-President E. J. (Buzzie) Bavasl, back home from a tour of the Latin American coun tries where he viewed a number of Dodger farmhands playing in the Cuban Winter League, spoke glowingly of Fernandez. "Fernandez has impressed everybody with his ; shortstopplng in Cuba." Bavasl said. ne can play that way in the big leagues, there will be a lot of changes made in our infield." "I would say our Infield situa tion was not -secure," he added. "Our only solid position Is first base where- Gil Hodges has a lock' on the Job. If Fernandez can win the shortstop berth and a lot of people say he can the battle for second base will be wide open. "Pee Wee Rees may move over to second, or even third. Junior Gilliam may be switched to left field and don't forget Billy Cox. Don Zimmer and our new young second - baseman, Charlie Neal. There should be a real scramble for Infield positions." Fernandez batted .282 last year at Montreal where he was regard ed as the best shortstop ever to appear in the Canadian metrop olis. Barber Winner Golf Tournamenf PALM SPRINGS, Calif. IP -Jerrv Barber of Los Angeles Mon day won the Southern California Open Golf championship for the third time in four years, defeat ing Bobby Rosburg, San Fran cisco, in an 18-hole playoff. Sunday they were tied with 207 after the regulation 64 holes. Legal Notice SUMMONS EQUITY No. 54-572 W THE CIRCUIT COURT Or THE STATE OF OREGON FOR THE COUNTY OF KLAMATH Jack L.
