Another son, Charles and his wife of Las Vegas, Nevada, were in Bly for a week's visit with their parents and br'others. ., Friend Of Hollywood Stars Dies After Long Career By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD m Today we're burying one of Hollywood's rich est characters, Stanley Rose, who died broke. 1 Stanley was never rich in terms of material wealth. But his life was rich in legend and few men had more friends. I counted "my self lucky to be one of them. As far as I can judge, he had only one enemy and that was Jobn Barleycorn. His death came last Sunday, because of a throat hem orrhage, at 55. ' ' Rose was a fey character who could be counted on to do the un predictable, He proved that in World War I. ' The elder Patterson had been nominated for attorney general on a pledge to rid Phenix City of or ganized crime. His law partner son won the nomination without oppo sition after his father was killed. Hundreds of witnesses have been questioned, but no one has been charged with the killing. Raft Sailor Leaves For Home PAGO PAGO, American Samoa tn William Willis, 61-year-old New Yorker, who recently com pleted a 115-day drifting, trip of more than 6.000 miles on a 35- foot balsa wood raft from Peru, started home yesterday. He left on the small ship Aolele for Suva in the Fiji Islands, where he plans to catch a plane for New York, where his wife Tess await him. Stanley knew them all Chaplin, Plckford, Fairbanks, Griffith, Bar- rymore. He used to pal around with a onetime boilermaker named Jvfack Sennett, among others. He Siired a young man from Fresno to sweep out the store. His name: William Saroyan. Stanley used to take a load of books and peddle them down the halls of the studio offices. Saroyan pushed the cart for him. The lack of a business sense fi nally did Stanley in. Out-of-work actors and writers spent hours In his shop reading books 'they never bought. Whatever profits came In promptly vanished in permanent loans Id hangers-on. He sold out the shop and left Hollywood to raise tomatoes in the Imperial Valley with a man who is remembered only as "Moon- ft.ee.". But they . soon found them selves out of the farming business and Stanley returned to .Holly wood as a writers' agent. ' A bookie staked him to ah of fice. One of Stanley's first big! deals was establishing his former I employe, Saroyan, as a big-name author. He sold Louis B. Mayer on the idea of having Saroyan take full charge, in making a movie out of "The Human Comedy." MGM gave them a check for S6O.000. Sarovan and Rose reveled for three days, jcarrying the check around with them. No one would cash it for them. Stanley encouraged many hoteful author who wanted to break Into print. , In his last months, he was In and out of the veterans' hospital and various Hollywood hotels. He has left little to his wife Maud and their son Bruce. But he bright ened the lives of hundreds of peo ple in and around Hollywood and he contributed more man me man's share to the literary prod uct of America.
