Berlin command revealed somewhat sheepishly Thursday that someone stole the entire public address system off the roof of an Army headquarters barracks here. By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS I Secretary of Defense Wilson held out the olive branch last night to those who took offense at lus allusion to dogs in a discussion of unemployment earlier this week. "I am sorry I- made inept re marks," Wilson said during an ad dress at a $10-a-plate Republican dinner in Chicago. "I admit that I made a mistake an unfortunate mistake bringing up those bird dogs at the same tune I was talk ing about people." However, he said his remarks at a Detroit news conference Mon day were "distorted by our lelt wing opponents." During questioning at thatnews conference, Wilson talked about the unemployment problem at some length and said t one point: ". . . I've got a lot of sympathy for people where a sudden change catches 'em but I've always liked bird dogs better than kennel-fed dogs. You know, one who'll get out and hunt for food rather than sit on his fanny and yell." A hue and cry of protest went up Immediately afterward from some Democrats: and labor union leaders, and some Republicans as well. Among those who at first reacted against Wilson was Republican Gov. William O. Stratton of III! nois, who suggested early yester day that Wilson's scheduled speech to the OOP fund-raising dinner be called off. However. Stratton decided later to go along with the decision of the dinner sponsors to carry out the program as planned. And as planned, he Introduced Wilson, re ferring to him as "a man . big enough to fight against odds of misunderstanding and partisan at tack when he believes himself do ing his best for his country." . . In Denver, the vacation White House termed "100 per cent wrong" a published report that President . Elsenhower had per suaded Stratton to go through with his appearance at the Chicago din ner. After Wilson spoke, Eisen hower's Denver headquarters had no comment. While this was going on. the po litical pot kept bubbling elsewhere. Vice President Nixon, speaking in Van Nuys. Calif., said Demo cratic party leaders oiier the vo ters little but "a thin diet of quips end criticism, fear and smear." He labeled Democratic chieftains "Doom-o-crats." In Houston, Rep. Sam Raybum of Texas told a news conference he cannot see where Secretary of State Dulles has changed any of the fundamentals of the Truman Acbeson foreign policy. But, added the House Democratic leader: "It is being administered in such a way that we have fewer friends in the world than we've ever had." In Washington, Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy (R-Wis), Just out of the Bethesda,, Md., naval hospital after treatment for a sinus condition, told newsmen he is "supporting all of the Republican candidates with one exception" Clifford . F, Case, who is running for the Sen ate in New Jersey. Case said last July ,7 that If he were elected, he would vote against continuing McCarthy as chairman or member of the Senate Government Operations Committee "or any other committee with sim ilar functions." McCarthy said he took his posi tion on Case's candidr.cy, not be cause of what Case had said of him, "but for other reasons I think will be made public before the election." He provided no details.
