Punt your name, address, zone; size, atyle number. 1 I HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON Sportsmen Aid Lake Project A tip of the hat from the Ore gon Game Commission to a group of Oregon sportsmen is in order since the Diamond Lake project has been completed. Approximately 140 sportsmen, mainly from Klamath Falls, Bend and the Rogue River Valley areas came through with flying colors by assisting game commission per sonnel in carrying out the rote none application to the southern Oregon lake. In addition to donating their time, many sportsmen broughi their personal boats and outboard motors to be used in the project. This assistance greatly aided in the application of the 100 tons of rotenone that was dispersed into th Intra P. W. Schneider, slale game di rector, commented, "The assis tance rendered by sportsmen ma terially aided in the Diamond Lake project, without them the ' prob lems of completing the project successfully would have been mul tiplied considerably. Salmon Run In Grande Ronde Spring Chinook salmon once again ran the Grande Ronde River in numbers which old-timers have not seen in over 30 years. Nearly 100 salmon were seen by commis sion personnel in a three-mile area near Woodley. By airplane count, 83 redds were recorded on the upper river and 19 redds on lower Sheep Creek. For many years prior to the early 1930s, splash dams and other barriers near Perry practically eliminated Chi nook salmon migration in the river, Successful spawning this year may be the beginning of an established run of chinook on the Grande Ronde. Linstedt, regional fire control chief. Hunters who abandoned warm ing fires weie the major offenders in the ratio of two to one over careless smokers and those aban doning their campiires, Linstedt staled. State and federal foresters and the Keep Green associations, as well as many private timber own ers are cooperating with game of ficials and state police in a con centrated effort to reduce tnese unnecessary forest and range fires. A rcv:ew oi past fire and wea ther records brings out one ot the chief reasons for concern this year. Hunters have shown a ten dency to become careless during or following cool, damp weatner, game and forest protection offi cials agree. Western Washington and Oregon have had the most favorable fire weather in many years. Linstedt points out, how ever, that while western stations were reporting fuel moisture read ings in the 10-15 per cent range, many cast-side fire weather sta tions have reported the fuel mois tures down to 5 and 6 per cent. With fuels that dry, fires can and do spread rapidly, he said. This is further illustrated by the large fire on Hart Mountain in. southern Oregon during the recent archery season. There is no cause for compla cency about fire at any time, Linstedt said. Warming fires and camp fires should be built only at camp in cleared places where they are sale and extinguished com pletely with water or by mixing with cool, damp earth till every spark is out. Foot travelers should smoke only in safe places while stopped and make sure that pipe ashes and cigar or cigarette stute are cold before discarding. He expressed high nraise for the many careful hunters, saying that they not only take care ol their own fires but often find and put out fires left by others. Campfire permits are needed If a hunter plans to camp out . on National Forest land and may "be obtained at any Ranger Station. For the convenience of people who plan to camp in the Fremont or Kogue River National Forests, permits may be obtained at the post office building in Klamath Falls, or the Ranger Station at Bly, Lakcview, Silver Lake Paisley.
