She breathed easier, however, hen he stepped safely lrom the Unal ladder rung to the partially sheeted roof for there was a vertical dillerence between them of about 12 feet. She sensed a smug reeling of security as she stood there on the ground looking up watching the large group of . men, hammering, carrying, hand ling and sawing boards, and stoop ing in almost every conceivable manner. Then she hurried home and be. gan planning a tasty supper for that special evening, she knew hubby would be hungry and she derived considerable satisfaction watching him enjoy his food in that spirit of worthy accomplish' ment. And they were exceedingly happy that morning to get the big 9x10x32 center beam in place the rafters up and the roof sheeting on the uew fire hall. Jack Moffitt and his man were down last Saturday with the final two yards of ready-mix an d t group of men, headed by Com' missioner Neal Eliot and a co helper, Lee Bernard, lined Up for the cement bucket brigade to pour the reinforcement beam over the doors in front of the building and ine one lr, the tear over the tin dows and door. Andy Duncan then finished lay ing up the end walls with nothing left but some odd jobs of mudding up around the beam and rafter ends which he did Monday. The men expect to get the three. layer roof tarred on this week starting Wednesday, barring ftorm. Bill Kelso will attend to the wiring needs next week. In addition to this lift Bill Kelso of the Arrow Electric Company in Lakeview who lives in our district will donate $25 in merchandise and labor. Both of the carpenters whom we have hired to work and sort of guide the operation, Syl vester Gallagher and Bill Smith, are donating a third of their labor which is certainly an item not to te sneezed at. I tossed in a rear door and a few partition brick and my labor is gladly given for what it is worth probably 25 cents per hour. The other commission ers have also donated generously of their time and labor, trucks, pickups and use of equipment. Jim Snider who is a pretty fair carpen ter, in his own right spent all day Sunday on the job helping on the roof. He also brought down a lond of lumber on his truck. It is almost Impossible to in clude the names of all those who have helped so far on the fire hall construction. But among some of those whose help has been most certainly appreciated by the board is that of Cliff Scrivner a real mechanic in every sense of the word with his welding torch ready and his whole hearted will' ingness to help about the fire-en-Kine and In putting this civio pro ject across. He deserves a vote of thanks from tne community. Others have helped tremendous ly including Neal Elliott and Jim Snider in ways vital to tne success of the undertaking. They live at the far north end of the district whose benefit from the fire department cannot be equal to those who live here in town. Their contribution becomes far more magnanimous considering this fact. Alvin Butler who is handy with carpenter tools put in a full day Sunday besides other help. Fire Chief Clarence McLain and his son. Lee, helped on the roof Sun day. He and Cliff took the truck out on a money raising drive Mon day evening. They got $65. Mr. A. L. Wood, the bee man of Ihe Lakeview Aviaries, donated his truck to haul brick and forms, on. His son. Forest, not only helped on the roof last Sunday but took Lar ry Angland and Lee MCLain to Class Mountain with him and brought home a big load of brick. This was a big help as was also the use of Darvin Robnetfs truck which son, Robert and Jim Vin cent, and Larry Angland took over after the other load oi pumice brick. Charley Carpenter, one oi tne firemen, helped on tne root aun- rfv along with the rest ol us would-be carventers. In all, the taoarri members are highly grati fied with the progress Deuig maae and Just hope we get the root on the thing before it storms. A plumb good plum-pickers' par ly was enjoyed last Friday eve ning. The annual event was held in the basement of the First Bnp list Church with 50 of the Bennett Plum orchard pickers and their families being present, including. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Bennett and Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Ruga. The party not only offered a world of good things to eat but included a program. Speaking of wild plums: Earl Butler got in a plum jam last week at his local home-kitchen wild-plum cannery. It seems his huge shipment of special Jar lids had failed to arrive that fit the particular type of Jars he had al ready purchased. His big supply of plums had reached that dead ripe stage, however, when they had to be canned. He cleaned the local merchants out of new Jars and lids thus drawing the com munity house-wives into the Jam too. They had their plums for pri vate consumption ready to can and as they ran out of lids, one by one they hurried down to get new lids or jars as the case may be only to find none in town. ttoi-i Butler's cannery which has been operating tor the past month with two to four women preparing the plums and canning still has about two weeks work before the finish. . t hnnrri nur rloe. Mavme Brvan. of Medford. arrived last Thursday to be on hand for her motner. Mrs. n. n Dougherty's 80th birthday which was celebrated last Friday. A birthday cake with cherry vanilla ice cream and coffee was served to the small group of close friends and relatives who helped celebrate her great big birthday, Mrs. Bryan will clay and visit about a month. Harvey McLain arrived a week ago last Wednesday for a IS day furlough before returning to his base at Seattle. Two 10 foot four Inch pipe sup ports were donated to the NPC fire department by Walter Dyke man, Lakeview watermaster, with the compliments of the city of Lakeview. The pipe will take the place -of the temporary plank sup ports now being used under the big beam In the fire hall. Cliff Scrivner is welding a flat footing to each end of the supports getting them ready for installation. We hope our fire department can be of service to Lakeview in our mu tual aid agreement for this act of kindness. On Saturday, September 4, wed ding nuptials took place in Reno, united Miss LaDene Scrivner and Allen (Duke) Brown of the Air Force, In matrimony. Duke was on a 10 day leave from his air base at Mountain Home, Idaho for the important event. LaDene is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Scrivner and Allen is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Thomas, with whom he made his home pri or to induction. He has 14 months to serve yet. Then the couple plan lo make their home in New Pine Creek. Bart Scrivner was best man and Miss Sylvia McManus of Willow Ranch was the bridesmaid, who, together with Mr. and Mis. Cllll Scrivner, and Bart's wife, Donna, accompanied the young couple to Reno, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Reed ol Yakima, Washington, visited with Mrs, Clara Cloud and family sev eral days last week and part ol the week before they took Mrs. Cloud to Silver Lake where she and the Reeds were former resi dents years ago. They sure had a line time visiting all their old time friends. The visitors left the latter part of last week for a continued vacation over on the coast. Mrs. Elizabeth Flowers of Al- turas has been doing substitute teaching for Mrs. Gladys Porter during the latter s convalescence, from surgery. Mrs. Freda Evans took a load of wild plums to Klamath Falls last Friday. My big brother Cecil Faris and wife Anna, paid us a surprise visit last Friday noon. They were ac companied by cousin Harold Pul lins and wife who made their first trip west. Harold lives at Mcdearyvitle, Indiana and Cecil has charge of the Chicago Boys Camp at Winona Lake, Indiana. They left last Saturday morning to visit mother nt Caldwell, Idaho. News notes were lost in the whirl of activity stimulated by the three day Lake County Round up. We enjoyed It immensely and it was one of the best but we were so busy that even now it seems only a faded memory of the past.
