Candidates Exchange Campaign Funds Charges By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Oregon Republicans and Demo crats over Ihe week end exchanged charges concerning campaign expenditures. Sen. Guy Cordon, the Republican incumbent who is seeking re election, said that Richard Neuberger, his Democratic oppo nent, "has already spent $23,000 for radio time alone." Neuberger answered by repeat ing his suggestion that each candidate limit himself to expendi ture of $26,000 in the campaign. Nixon Defends GOP Record OMAHA i Vice President Nixon declared last night the Eis en'iower administration is "kick ing the Communists, fellow travel ers i'nd bad security risks out of the federal government by the thousands.' "The Communist conspiracy is being smashed to bits by this ad ministration." he told a Republi can meeting winding up a day of campaigning by the vice president in Nebraska. Previous Democratic administra tions, Nixon charged, "underesti mated the Communist danger at home and ignored it. "They covered up rather than cleaned up," he told some 1,300 persons in the audience at an Omaha thcafer. Nixon, at Omaha and In an earli er speech in Orand Island, Neb.. quoted National Democratic Chair man Stephen Mitchell as saying that should a Democratic Congress be elected, it would follow the policies of former President Tru man. Thus, said the vice president, voters will have a clear-cut choice in voting for congressional candi dates; either they will be voting to support the Elsenhower admin istration or for a return to the policies of the Truman adminis tration which he said had Been repudiated by voters in the last election. Cordon's statement was to the effect that Democrats spent more money that year than they re ported, Morgan said. "Senator Cordon's statement is an Inexcusable falsehood," Morgan declared. He said he would resign if Cordon could prove any substan tial discrepancy in the report that Democrats spent S91.000 in 1948. compared with $524,000 spent by Republicans. If Cordon cannot prove a dis crepancy, "we will accept his apology," Morgan said. Cordon's headquarters reported that it has learned that Neuberger has scheduled $23,000 worth of lime at three Portland and 21 upstate radio stations, and at Portland and Eugene television stations. "I have no objection to his use of funds. They are necessary, to a campaign. But when my opponent uses a cryting towel over his campaign funds, it is part and parcel of the half-truths that characterize this campaign," Cor don said. Neuberger, speaking In Portland Sunday, criticized Cordon's vote for the Bricker Amendment, which Neuberger said was designed to tie the hands of the President in foreign policy matters. He also criticized Cordon's "uirwllllngness" to debate the campaign issues in the Lincoln Douglas tradition. Cordon's voting record was praised, however, by Clarence Davis, undersecretary of the Interior, at a Republican fund raising djnner at McMinnville. Davis urged "partnership" devel opment of the Pacific Northwest power resources and said it was not true that the Eisenhower administration "has deserted the Pacific Northwest, that it is giving away resources, that it is out to sabotage public power."
