The conqueror is Harry Bela fonte, the sensational youne singer. He saved his career in one even ing. It happened a couple of years ago in Las Vegas. Harry had made a small hit in a couple of chio night spots in New York with his singing of (oik songs. Very high brow stuff. So some smart character booked hurt into Vegas, not realising the difference be tween the smart Manhattan audi ences and the pleasure seekers of the Nevada spas. "I played the first show of the evening, and it was horrible." re called Harry. "I don't mean they just didn't like my act; they were abusive. The orchestra members started snickering among them selves. The 'dese and dem' guys started to get threatening. I'm sure that if stoning had not been punishable by law, I would have gotten it from the audience. "I got mad. I didn't mind if they didn't like my act. That was their privilege. But I thought it was wrong for them to be hurling such abuse at me. "I decided to salvage what I could. I had opened the show with a couple of old English folk songs. Naturally they fell flat. So I told my accompanist, Milard Thomas, to bring out some of the arrange ments we had been saving. "We jugged the act completely. The reaction was entirely differ, ent. from the first song. The au dience was enthusiastic, and we were the talk of the Las Vegas strip." From then on. Harry was in. He plared one of the leading roles in MOM's "Bright Road." He starred on Broadway in "John Murray An derson's Almanac" and came back to Hollywood to play the lead in "Carmen Jones." He is embark ing on a night club tour, having just closed at the Cocoanut Grove here. A busy man. this Belafonte. But he was not always so. When he got out of the Navy after the war. Harry enrolled at an actor s workshop, where he studied with such eager young; actors as Mar lon Brando and Tony Curtis. But unlike the others, he had little op portunity for roles after gradua tion. He sought other jobs, like dyeing fabric for $37.50 a week. Then he had a chance to sing m a night club. It meant $75 a week for two hours' work a night, so he took it. He worked his way up to $250 a week at Martha Raye's club in Florida. Then he quit, and made folk songs his specialty. State Beer Sale Shows Decrease PORTLAND tfi Beer sales dropped 11.7 per cent in Oregon in the fiscal year ended June 30, the Oregon Liquor Control Com mission reported Thursday. That was three million gallons under the previous year's total. Sales ol wine and liquor mean while went up 1.82 per cent. The totals were 24.199.579 gallons of beer. 1,077.931 gallons ol wine, and 2017860 gallons of liquor. Raymond E. Pettey, educational officer for the State Department of Veterans' Affairs, said students should establish eligibility and file their application forms immediate ly with his office in order to avoid loss of the benelits. Applications bv mail should go to the Salem office in the State Library Build ing. They may be filed in person at either the Salem or Portland olfices, or through county veter ans' service officers. The neces sary forms also are available at most schools. State aid pays the veteran $50 a month while enrolled in a full time, undergraduate college course, or $33 a month for any other accredited course requiring 40 classroom hours of attendance monthly. Attendance of less than 40 hours pays at the rate of 87!i cents per classroom hour.
