Neuberger Urges Public Atomic Power Control State Senator Richard L. Neu berger, Democratic nominee for United States Senator, Thursday told a crowd of supporters at. the Multnomah County fair In Gresham that he "definitely and firmly" fa vored public control of the aiqmic energy patents which have cost the American people at least $12,500, 000,000. Neuberger said that the pro longed debate in the Senate over the atomic power issue had helped to alert the voters of the nation. "This fact," he said, "resulted in the defeat ot a bill that would have given atomic-energy patents to a favored few gigantic industrial cor porations, to exploit for private gain at the expense of the public Interest." Neuberger assailed those who la-1 fcel as "socialistic" public sovern signty over the atom and he criti cized the vote of his opponent, Guy Cordon, who favored the adminis tration bill which would have al lowed private power companies to use atomic patents. "One of the greatest of conserva tive Republicans. Arthur Vanden berg, believed the public should keep in Its own hands the means of producing atomic energy," claimed Neuberger. The Democratic Senate nominee quoted from Vandenbeig's autobi ography In which the late Michi gan Senator declared that, until a complete' international agreement had been reached for outlawing atomic weapons, "it is absolutely vital that public ownership and public control of atomic energy should be as completely airtight and fool proof as it Is possible to make it. Anything less would be surrender to the greatest hazard of the ages." "That's what Arthur Vandenburg wrote," said Neuberger. "Yet Sen ator Cordon and Secretary McKay in defiance of the wisdom of Sen ator Vandenberg want to extend the reckless give-away program to atomic energy. They want to make a gift of the atomic program to a few monopolistic power companies. It is a blessing that the Democrats, a few liberal Republicans and In dependent Senator Morse have kept this bargain-basement presentation from being carried through." Neuberger declared that, if elect ed to the Senate, he would follow the advice of Senator Vandenberg with respect to retaining public control over atomic energy. "We don't want an atomic war between Pacific Power & Light and Port land General Electric," he quipped. "It would be too dangerous to the people."
